I'm Asking: Where Has Your Work Been?

As much as we try to avoid it, sometimes we can't escape bringing our work with us when we're away from home. Most recently, my work came with me on a trip to Los Angeles, but the most inappropriate place my work has been was a camping ground in Northern California (believe me, my friends gave me plenty of flack about this one). Many of us have traveled during the last month or so, and I'm curious if your job managed to make it along on your holiday. Where has your work been?

Definition: Money Disorder

Financial therapy is a relatively new area of psychology that is designed to treat money disorders. After squandering most of her fortune, Wynonna Judd sought out financial therapy and says of her experience, "If I can do it, anyone can. I’m in absolute financial recovery. I live by cash only, by cash budget. I’ll go into Target with a money envelope." According to the New York Times, money disorders treated in recent years have included the following conditions.

Overspending
Underspending (Depression mentality)
Serial borrowing
Financial infidelity
Workaholism
Financial incest (lording money over relatives to control them)
Financial enabling (for example, throwing large sums at adult children who then are not motivated to support themselves)

Workaholic is one of those words that's thrown around frequently, but have you ever stopped to think about what it really means? Working compulsively is a serious problem for many people, especially now that technology allows us access to our work at all times. The questions below come from the Workaholics Anonymous website, and it notes that you may be a workaholic if you answer yes to three or more questions.

Do you get more excited about your work than about family or anything else?
Are there times when you can charge through your work and other times when you can't?
Do you take work with you to bed? On weekends? On vacation?
Is work the activity you like to do best and talk about most?
Do you work more than 40 hours a week?
Do you turn your hobbies into money-making ventures?
Do you take complete responsibility for the outcome of your work efforts?
Have your family or friends given up expecting you on time?
Do you take on extra work because you are concerned that it won't otherwise get done?
Do you underestimate how long a project will take and then rush to complete it?

Tips on taking aholic out of work:

Set realistic limits and boundaries for work. Don't slack off but also don't go above and beyond the call of duty 100% of the time.
If you make a date outside of work it is important to keep it.
Don't always bring work home with you. Sometimes it's OK but if you find yourself looking at your computer more than your kids, you should definitely cut back.
Take advantage of your lunch break. This is a great time to meet your husband or best friend. Plus it also gets you moving, which is always a good thing.
It is OK that you're not superwoman. If work is getting tough ask your husband to help more around the house, if the kids are sick ask a coworker to help you out.
Weekends are your friend. We have weekends for a reason, use it for some quality time for yourself as well as for your family.
Make an effort to have conversations that are not about work when you leave. Of course you want to tell your husband what your annoying coworker did, but be sure to limit the conversations so you don't ramble all night, forgetting to ask him about his day.

Interview Tip: Rework Your Workaholic Answer

You may go above and beyond to get your job done, but stay away from using the word workaholic in a job interview. When you're asked about a workplace weakness, employers want to hear something more thoughtful than a contrived answer suggesting you will put their company at the top of your priorities. Even if you're truly a workaholic, but many employers would see it as a cop-out answer that doesn't indicate much about your ability to do the job.

Instead, try approaching the weakness question with a productive answer. The Wall Street Journal spoke with a New York psychologist who gave a great example of what I'm referring to: He recommended saying something like, "My weakness is I get bored by routine," as an example of how to respond when interviewing with a start-up. This technique can easily be applied to any position you're after.

Southwest Offers Up Sale Alerts, Mobile Reservations in App

I don't know if you guys use AP Mobile, but I find its breaking news alerts to come in handy when I need to stay on top of developing stories. You could say the same for Southwest Airlines' new app, which will keep you travel gurus informed on what the airline has to offer.

Available on your iPhone or iPod Touch, the app allows you to book, confirm, and check-in for flights, while its new "Ding!" feature immediately alerts you to any new and upcoming airfare sales so you can get the most bang for your travel buck. Plus, you can book car rentals, get flight schedules, and redeem your Rapid Rewards points. Great for people who love to take advantage of cheap fares, maybe not so great for those workaholics who never take vacations. PS - you should do that more often.

Did You Hear About the Morgans?: Nothing New

It's probably predictable of me to tell you that romantic comedy/mild thriller Did You Hear About the Morgans? is itself predictable. Like a lot of lazy rom-coms, it's also rife with cliches and suffering from an ultimately lame plot: a married couple on the outs (Hugh Grant and Sarah Jessica Parker) view a murder and is shipped off to Wyoming as part of the witness protection program.

As flimsy as that sounds in print, it plays out even sillier on screen: the victim Paul and Meryl Morgan see is a man with a knife sticking out of his back, like Clue. Plus, it's a limp contrivance to push the troubled married couple back together, which you know is going to happen by the end of the movie.

But, the film is not without its merits; to see what else I thought, just read more.

Though it's tough to redeem such a poorly put together film, the cast is one strong point. I'll watch Hugh Grant play the same character over and over again just to hear his accent and British humor. Sarah Jessica Parker is always welcome too, even if all I see in her Meryl Morgan is Carrie Bradshaw with a workaholic streak. There's not much sexual chemistry between the two leads, but you can look past it since they're individually so irresistible. Grant and Parker really work with what they're given, which are two very insubstantial characters. Blame the script - the stereotypical Manhattanites seem like they're written by someone with a very cursory knowledge of New York (think jokes about Chinese food delivery).

The Wyoming residents don't have it any better - they love to shoot guns, smoke, and eat meat, much to the chagrin of the transplanted city folk. Again, the only thing that saves these characters is the actors who are inhabiting them: a luminous Mary Steenburgen, Sam Elliott, and everyone's favorite TV grandpa, Wilford Brimley. (Other cast members aren't so lucky: Elisabeth Moss is wasted in the role of Meryl's ball-busting assistant).

The reason you may actually want to watch Did You Hear About the Morgans? is not that it's any great feat of movie-making (it's assuredly not). You'll want to see it if you do like romantic comedies, because it's exactly like everything you've seen. That kind of redundancy can be comforting.
