Where Are You Most Likely to Get Your News Online?

Though it was nearly a year ago, hearing anything about Michael Jackson's death makes me think about the claim that many tech-savvy people get their news from Twitter - or at least learn about breaking news from there. But I can't think of too many news stories that I first spotted on Twitter since then. While it's true that Twitter streams are a good way to share information fast, new research suggests people are not getting news from Twitter after all. According to the report, young people are more likely to get their news from Google News or Facebook, which lands at No. 3 on the list behind CNN.com and The Huffington Post. Could it have anything to do with constant silly or non-newsworthy trending topics like #justinbieber?

It's only a matter of time until new research claims new top online sources for news, so I'm curious where you prefer to find news online.

Is a Federal Agent Trying to Friend You on Facebook?

Chances are, probably not. But the US Department of Justice released several slides from a presentation detailing how federal agents use social networking sites. Reading through the bullet-pointed list is entertaining; for example, "As social networks go, LinkedIn's use for criminal communications appears limited." Excellent analysis, federal government.

Laughing aside, the list does provide a small amount of insight into how law enforcement and government are using social networking sites to gather information on suspects, suspected criminal activity, or potential witnesses. To find out what kind of information they're looking for, just read more.

Investigators can gather information about a person's location and relationships, or prove or disprove an alibi. The presentation also details legal parameters for dealing with the sites; apparently Facebook is cooperative with disclosing user information in the event of an emergency while MySpace requires a search warrant for certain messages and content. Twitter seems to be the "safest" when it comes to users sharing personal information - it has a history of producing data only in response to legal process. If you're a law-abiding citizen, there's probably no need to worry about the feds snooping around in your personal information, but it's interesting to learn how they're using these social technologies to their advantage.

If you're already going through and purging your unwanted Facebook friends (so harsh!), then you might as well as extend the Spring cleaning to your Twitter feed while you're at it. JustUnfollow allows you to see people you're following, but that aren't following you back. This way, you can kick them to the curb for not sharing the "Follow" love. Just sign in with Twitter, and start cleaning house.

Twitter Announces New Platform, @Anywhere

In a SXSWi keynote address earlier today, Twitter CEO Ev Williams announced Twitter's new ad platform, @anywhere. @Anywhere will take content sites we visit every day and "recreate open, engaging interactions providing a new layer of value for visitors without sending them to Twitter.com." In its simplest form, the service allows a user to follow people and companies directly from their websites. For example, if you're reading an article on a site like NYtimes.com, you'll be able to immediately find and follow the author on Twitter - without navigating away from the content you're reading.

Williams hopes this new platform will help lower the adoption barrier for new Twitter users, since they will be able to easily follow and communicate with other fans and content. It also helps to solve the problem of how to find interesting and relevant people and content to follow. This will be a big help for businesses, as they can garner many followers directly from their sites. Launch partners include Digg, Yahoo, the New York Times, Bing, and others.

Location-Based Features Officially Become a Trend

Twitter recently rolled out its locations feature, allowing tweets posted from the web to include your location. While this functionality has been available to developers for a while, you weren't able to geo-tag your tweets from Twitter.com until this week.

You have to turn the function on to use it, so there's no risk of accidentally including your location if you don't want to. If you do enable the function, the line beneath your tweet on Twitter.com reads "x minutes ago via web from [x location]." The location text then links to a pop-out Google map detailing your general location. This could be useful for tracking breaking news, or if you're at a conference or other event where you're traveling between cities or even neighborhoods. . .but it's just more information that could potentially be an overshare - or even a security risk.Twitter is the latest service to launch this location-based function, on the heels of Facebook's announced plan to do the same. Can we officially say that location-based features have jumped the shark, or is it just the next big thing?
