One of my New Year's resolutions is to always bring my lunch to work. I'm trying to save money, eat healthier, and have more time so I can go on a long walk during my workday. So far, so good!

The magic of the holidays has worn off a bit and most of us are back to reality. We are entrenched in the daily grind of commuting, meetings, fresh projects and goals for the new year. While the turn of the calendar brings great resolutions and renewed energy, it can also be a little staggering.

The recession has affected us all in one way or another — if you haven’t experienced salary freezes or cuts, layoffs, or home foreclosures over the past year or so, odds are someone you know has.
But, what about the recession’s less tangible effects? A New York Times/CBS News poll released this week explores the emotional fallout of being unemployed, and the results are sobering.

If I had a quarter for every time I was exposed to the word recession this year, I'd have a pretty little fund built up for holiday gifts. The economy has been the cause of so much stress and heartache, and it's hard to want a reminder of those feelings during a time that's supposed to be joyful.
There's a line of Merry Recession Christmas cards that is banking on the recession having a place in this holiday season.

In the morning I always make a breakfast smoothie using fresh produce. But sometimes our household goes a little overboard in the amount of produce we buy. Instead of throwing out spoiled fruits and veggies, we freeze our produce to preserve its nutritional content and halt the ripening process.

There are a lot of hidden calories in espresso drinks, especially holiday offerings like pumpkin spice lattes. A cup of plain coffee is usually a safe bet calorie wise but buying one cup a day can easily amount to five hundred dollars a year. Some break rooms have coffee machines but the stuff that comes out of those things are usually pretty gross tasting.

Despite the health benefits of water, people still love to drink juice and soda. Unfortunately, these beverages are usually empty calories filled with sugar that do little in the way of hydration — even diet soda can be damaging. I think that water tastes great, but sometimes I get bored of drinking it all the time.
