Doing what you can to prepare for a performance review puts you in the best position possible for a smooth experience, but unexpected bumps can certainly arise. If you and your boss haven't been communicating well, that leaves an open door for surprise comments that could shake your confidence. Don't let these minor moments distract you from getting the most from your review.

Annual performance reviews often coincide with the holiday season, and that's at least true for Sugar HQ. While there's nothing to really be scared about, it's natural to try and think about what negative feedback you could be facing by over-analyzing the smallest mistakes from the past year. It's more productive to brush up on the positive details rather than be consumed by the negative, so replace any ounce of dread you have by being confidently prepared.

Annual performance reviews are right around the corner, so let's brush up on the boss's lingo to make sure we understand the feedback we're given. If your boss told you that you need to "manage up," would you know what she meant?
According to Rosanne Badowski, co-author of Managing Up: How to Forge an Effective Relationship With Those Above You, your boss wants you to "go above and beyond the tasks assigned to you so that you can enhance your manager's work."

Performance reviews aren't all about the money, but for an employee's bottom line, they are. Companies have been making big decisions this quarter based on the poor performance of the past year and the uncertainty they face going in to 2009. With big companies laying off by the thousands (in the last week we saw Yahoo and Goldman Sachs cut ten percent of their massive workforces) and many smaller companies instilling temporary hiring freezes, we can be fairly certain that 2008 raises will be, at most, unremarkable.

We are nearing the end of the year and many companies are gearing up for annual employee performance reviews. There isn't universal support for this type of review process that often involves written feedback from managers regarding their employees, usually presented in person in a one-on-one or two-on-one format. A few of us here at Sugar HQ have been lamenting about how quickly this year is going and are finding it difficult to believe the year is half-way over. Rather than focus on the time that has gone by, we should look ahead to the next six months and make some short-term goals to keep us on track.
Many companies traditionally hold year-end evaluations some time in December to review employees' overall job performance.

The season is just under way, but your locks don't have to look abused by heat, chlorine, and/or windy days. Reader Jjasinsk gave Redken Extreme Anti-Snap Leave-In Treatment ($18) a whirl after experiencing some damage to her hair, and here's what she thought:
I've never had much faith in products that claim to repair damaged hair, but this product has really performed. After compulsively using Sun-In on my hair for a year, the front sections were broken, matted, and elastic.

Jude Law looked smart in his suit as he left the Wyndham's Theatre in London following a performance of Hamlet, which he's starring in until August 22. He looked relaxed and handsome after the curtain call, and signed autographs as he left the venue for all the fans waiting outside — the reviews are looking positive, and he's been compared favourably to David Tennant's part in the RSC production last year. What do you think — will you be headed to the West End to see Jude as Hamlet?
