In Need of Cubicle Cleanup

After coming across some frightening statistics on germs in an office cubicle, I could hardly stomach lunch at my desk before I launched a full-out assault on the filth lurking around my cube. Now, I'm passing the word along - it's time to scrub down your desk and make regular cleanings a part of your healthy office lifestyle. Remember, if you're eating, drinking, and sitting for hours on end in this space, you're picking up all the germs and carting them with you, home and back, day after day. Just to give you an idea of how dirty your desk space really is, University of Arizona microbiologist Charles Gerba, Ph.D. reports that the "typical desk-home to the rarely cleaned keyboard, mouse, and phone-carries 400 times more bacteria than the average toilet seat." Yuck.

Casa Verde: An Eco Glam Office

Earlier today, I showed you the impressive before and after pics from Bollare's office renovation. However, I only teased you with one of many photos of the gorgeous space. When Bollare, a full service fashion, beauty, and lifestyle public relations firm located in West Hollywood, CA, decided that it was time to move its office, the company turned to Green Tangerine to help transform the raw space into something both fab and green.

Bollare turned to the eco-friendly wallpaper of Mod Green Pod for the striking, vibrant paper throughout its office. For paint, Benjamin Moore Pristine EcoSpec Paint: Zero-VOC was used on the walls, and underfoot, bamboo flooring made the cut for this eco office. Lighting is provided by CFLs, though Bollare notes that the lights are rarely turned on, due to the natural light that saturates the space.

Smarter Eats: Keep a Stash of Healthy Snacks at Your Desk

In the past, whenever my co-workers and I got hungry, we would hightail it to the nearest food mart - some of my colleagues never even made it past the break room vending machine. Not only is this bad for the wallet, it's also bad for the waistline. Mostly everything in a vending machine is crap, and most mini marts don't offer much beyond chips and candy.

One way to eat healthier is to always make sure you have access to nutritious foods. Since this can be a problem at work, I've started stashing healthy snacks at my desk. That way, when I'm hungry I can grab something that's good for me instead of heading out to find the least offensive food culprit. Having healthy snacks at your desk is also a great way to curb hunger before it gets too great. During the workday, it's especially important that the body gets the fuel it needs to remain energized and alert.

My current snack stash includes almonds, whole wheat crackers, granola, and satsuma oranges - I also keep yogurt and nonfat milk in the office refrigerator. Before you head to work, put a few healthy snacks in your bag that you can keep at your desk; it's definitely a nice treat to give yourself during the day.

Nonetheless, with just a bit of work, we knew the desk would make a great addition to our home office. Once primed, painted, and outfitted with new hardware, this study companion was ready to roll.

I love a good workplace TV show. Between the crazy comedy and the drama that can occur in our real-life offices, you've gotta admit, some aspects of these shows aren't totally off base. So, while I'm hoping no one out there really has to deal with a co-worker like The Office's Dwight, I'm sure someone has to put up with the antics of a similar character in her own workplace. Even if that's not that case, we want to know your pick for the most realistic work-based show. What gets your vote for the most believable work scenario on TV?

The Best Office Trend in 2009

The four-day work week takes top prize as your favorite trend for the office in '09. Leaner company budgets spurred some new trends at work, but 50 percent of you didn't mind a shorter work week and fewer hours on the clock.

Still, for those of us who couldn't manage to get it all done in less time, at least telecommuting, which earned 22 percent of the vote, and this year's second place prize, makes it possible to get the job done even if we're not in the office. It wasn't an easy year job-wise, but these creative working solutions have earned a spot in our Best of 2009.
