We all know the hiring outlook for the New Year is down from what it was going into 2008, so I'm choosing to focus on the positives this New Year's Eve day. Flexibility in the workplace could be just as good for your health as flexibility in the body, new research has found. A flexible work life, including telecommuting and job shares, is good for your health as researchers found that if people have the ability to work from home and to compress work weeks, they are more likely to make healthier lifestyle choices, to exercise more and to sleep better.
It makes sense to me, but it's sad that most of us do not have this flexibility without quitting our jobs completely.

Google might be on top of the Internet-search world, but its two-year run as the best company to work for has come to an end. Performance reviews aren't all about the money, but for an employee's bottom line, they are. Companies have been making big decisions this quarter based on the poor performance of the past year and the uncertainty they face going in to 2009. With big companies laying off by the thousands (in the last week we saw Yahoo and Goldman Sachs cut ten percent of their massive workforces) and many smaller companies instilling temporary hiring freezes, we can be fairly certain that 2008 raises will be, at most, unremarkable.
