Kirstie Alley's Decorating Dos and Don'ts

Kirstie Alley, a former interior designer, and Oprah have teamed up for a fun contest awarding one of Oprah's fans with a room in their home decorated by Alley herself. As proof of Alley's skills, there's a video interview with the actress on Oprah's site, asking what her biggest decorating dos and don'ts are. Aside from "holiday slipcovers" (you'll see), I'd say it sounds like she definitely knows what she's talking about. Here they are:

One of my big decorating don'ts is, well, I hate faux finishes. So, I'm like, don't do the faux finish. If you want a finish that's legitimate and Italian, then do Venetian plaster - and have someone who knows what they're doing do it.

The second one is nothing crafty. Don't decorate with ducks, k? No ducks, no . . . I don't know. I just can't go crafty.

My primary thing with interior design is this: design your house in a way that in 30 years, you're gonna love it still. And it has a timeless quality. That doesn't mean you can't refresh things.

More than don'ts, my other do is if you've got children or animals, always slipcover. Always, always, always. And they're beautiful anyway. And then you can have a holiday slipcover and an everyday slipcover.

This is the big don't: do not carpet bathrooms!

Oprah Helps Parents Keep Their Kids Safe From Predators

In yesterday's chilling episode of Oprah, the talk show host sat down with four child molesters and their therapist. After citing a startling statistic - that 90 percent of child molesters know their victims - Oprah (herself a victim of abuse) asked the men the advice they would give parents to protect their children. Here is what they said:

Be alert when an adult spends more time focused on the children at a party than socializing with other adults. You don't have to mistrust people, but open your eyes and watch what is happening.
Be alert when an adult is touching your child unnecessarily - asking the kid to sit on the adult's lap, cuddling, or partaking in back rubs and and foot massages.
Open the lines of communication with your child so they don't seek out other relationships for validation.
Pay attention to your children and believe them when they tell you something is happening. Kids don't lie about this stuff.
Listen to your instincts when something seems odd.

Go Shopping With Alicia Silverstone

On yesterday's Oprah Show, actress Alicia Silverstone took cameras grocery shopping with her. I have to say that I was surprised at how many processed foods Alicia picked out. Although I know a lot of vegans who rely on synthetic meat and processed foods as the backbone of their diet, I expected Alicia to be different.

In her book, The Kind Diet, the actress really touts the benefits of grains, vegetables, and fruits over convenience food. Because of that, I'm thinking this list might not be reflective of Alicia's normal dietary habits, but her way of showing a mass audience that you can still eat well and indulge if you're vegan.

While shopping, Alicia raved about brown rice ("If you add whole grain rice to your diet, it will change you") and leafy greens ("They're loaded with calcium and make your skin glow"). She also couldn't wait to bite into a mint-flavored ice cream alternative, a Rice Dream mud pie. Alicia said that the mud pies still make her feel "naughty" in the same way that ice cream can.

The Pouf: Jersey Shore and Polygamists Are Not So Different

If you're looking to get hair perfectly poufed, then you should look to the ladies of the FLDS and not the creatures of Jersey Shore. Today US Weekly had Snooki demonstrate how to make the pouf (aka the Bumpit or the Snookit), but, even with the help of the JWow and The Situation, it was a bit of a tease.

Yet go back not even a year to when Oprah kicked up some dust on the FLDS Yearning For Zion ranch, and you'll get much better instructions, sans hairspray. It's pretty much the same method, except they call teasing "ratting," and really that's more appropriate. Plus, they are like way better at it!

When Bristol and Sarah Palin appeared on Oprah last week to talk about the 19-year-old's sex life, or lack thereof, Oprah seemed more than a little skeptical. Teen mom Bristol said she plans on not having sex until she gets married and thinks other young women should have the same goal. After Bristol declined Oprah's offer to retract her public abstinence vow, Oprah said: "I'm just wondering if that's a realistic goal." Oprah probably remembers having a similar conversation with Britney Spears a few years ago. You can watch that vintage interview below. Do you know anyone who remained celibate until marriage?
