10: Adam Savage
Ray Tamarra/Getty ImagesAdam Savage is but one half of the popular "Mythbusters" team.
You know him as one half of the "Mythbusters" -- Discovery Channel's wildly successful show that's part science, part fun. Aside from being a pretty smart person, Savage (@donttrythis) also has a pretty interesting life, one actually worth following on Twitter.

This afternoon I was lucky enough to participate in an interview session with the most decorated American athlete in Winter Olympic history — seven-time medalist Apolo Ohno. The speed skater was nice enough to field questions live via Twitter from his 100,000+ followers (including me!) before heading back onto the ice to train. Gotta love technology!

The faster I can update my social network statuses, the better, especially for the rapid-fire pace of Twitter. There's already a Firefox download for making Twitter updates from your address bar, but throw the word "fox" into it, and I'm a sucker (case in point).
TwitterFox works seamlessly from your Firefox browser window (and it's only for Firefox, if that wasn't obvious enough) to bring you the up-to-the-minute updates of your friends.

One cool Twitter benefit: you can find and follow just about anyone — friends, celebrities, or even people you don't know. One potentially scary Twitter feature: you can be found and followed by just about anyone. Sure, you can easily lock your account so you have to approve every person who wants to follow your updates, but some users don't necessarily want to use Twitter in that way.

Saying there are a million ways to connect with people online isn't much of an overstatement. The trouble is, all that online communication and connection alters in-person interactions. People now use Facebook to get to know one another and, for better or for worse, judge one another on their online activity, friends, and reputation.

I know how it is: you sign up for a new social networking site and you spend the better half of an hour trying to come up with the perfect screen name. That's what happened to a majority of my friends when they signed up on Twitter.
With Tweexchange, you can type in your preferred name and see if it's available.

Twitter switch for Guardian, after 188 years of ink
• Newspaper to be available only on messaging service
• Experts say any story can be told in 140 characters
Rio Palof
The Guardian, Wednesday 1 April 2009
Consolidating its position at the cutting edge of new media technology, the Guardian today announces that it will become the first newspaper in the world to be published exclusively via Twitter, the sensationally popular social networking service that has transformed online communication.
The move, described as "epochal" by media commentators, will see all Guardian content tailored to fit the format of Twitter's brief text messages, known as "tweets", which are limited to 140 characters each. Boosted by the involvement of celebrity "twitterers", such as Madonna, Britney Spears and Stephen Fry, Twitter's profile has surged in recent months, attracting more than 5m users who send, read and reply to tweets via the web or their mobile phones.
