After the oft-annoying planning and booking process, the last thing on my mind is canceling a vacation. However, I once preliminarily booked hotel rooms for a pal's birthday with a 24-hour-notice cancellation policy directly from the resort's website. I knew I'd secured something at a good price while I diligently monitored my favorite travel sites to see if a room at a more desirable hotel would significantly drop in price (it did) or if I changed my mind and decided to go a different weekend (did that, too.).

Long, but worth the effort (I think)
By Scott Ritter
There is a curious phenomenon taking place in the American media at the moment: the lionization of Gen. Stanley McChrystal, the American military commander in Afghanistan. Although he has taken a few lumps for playing politics with the White House, McChrystal has generally been sold to the American public as a “Zen warrior,” a counterinsurgency genius who, if simply left to his own devices, will be able to radically transform the ongoing debacle that is Afghanistan into a noble victory that will rank as one of the greatest political and military triumphs of modern history.

A guy named Chez Paziena who runs Deus Ex Malcontent and was until earlier this month working for CNN as a producer on American Morning got the Dooce treatment for blogging. He was called into his boss’ office and told they were concerned about the fact that he was blogging online under his own name and thought that it might reflect poorly on their efforts to remain neutral. Paziena has a personal blog and is a regular contributor to The Huffington Post along with our friends at Pajiba.

Free speech for me, not for thee
By Rich Lowry
Barack Obama has already brought change. He's ended the "chilling effect."
Any restrictions on speech — real or imagined — were once inevitably deemed to have a "chilling effect" on people who would otherwise exercise their First Amendment rights if they weren't so frightened by the possibility of running afoul of the law.

Legendary director and occasional actor Sydney Pollack has died of stomach cancer at his home, surrounded by his friends and family, according to the Associated Press. Pollack directed some of the most influential and commercially successful films of the last forty years, including Tootsie, The Way We Were, The Interpreter, The Firm, They Shoot Horses, Don’t They?, Out of Africa, and most recently, Sketches of Frank Gehry.
