Harley Gives Us an Inside Peek at His Celebrity Clients

Harley Pasternak is a busy guy. In about the span of a week, he left his training duties on the Lady Gaga tour in Europe, headed home to LA to see 10 clients, and then crossed the Pacific to Hawaii for two more. When I finally caught up with him in Tampa, he was already planning his departure to Toronto, his childhood home.

Harley - whose client list reads like a who’s who of Hollywood - never expected that he’d become THE go-to trainer for the stars. "I was studying to be in medicine," says Harley. "Personal training was something I did; it was a side business that grew and grew and next thing you knew I had three studios and 12 trainers and I was like, 'OK, I guess this is my career.'"

He describes his work as "the coolest thing in the world," and it’s easy to understand why. Not many people can say they shoot hoops with Kanye West and Common or hang backstage with Katy Perry, Alicia Keys, and Lady Gaga. Working with musicians seems to be his current thing right now, "They’re very creative people, they have more control over their own destiny to the extent that they tend to be a little more stable," says Harley. "I enjoy working with actors too but actors are more project-to-project where musicians have an ongoing thing."

Harley pulled back the curtain a little bit and shared with me what it was like to work with these amazing artists. To see what he had to say about each one of them, read more.

Lady Gaga. In the kitchen, Lady Gaga, or Gaga as he - and everyone else - calls her, is a bit of a chef, even helping him develop recipes for his 5 Factor World Diet book. "As I presented the recipes for the 10 healthiest countries in the world, she suggested mixing and matching the ingredients from different countries," Harley says. "She would make a salad or a stir fry and bring elements of Italy and Japan together into one recipe, which was really helpful to me."

Kanye West. Through several world tours Harley has grown pretty close to Kanye. "Everyone gives him a hard time for the things he says and does, but all the bad things you see in the public, those are all the bad things about him. Every bad thing about Kanye you know." The Kanye that Harley knows is "interesting, inspiring, passionate, and creative." Says Harley, "No one has more energy than him, training him is amazing."

Common. After four years of working together, Harley says that Common has become a close, personal friend. Not only is he one of Harley's favorite clients, he also one of the "hardest workers" he knows. "Common has a movie coming out called Just Right and he is the lead. When people see his body they are going to be talking about it for a year."

Katy Perry and Alicia Keys. Harley says one of the biggest perks from his job comes from working with clients that he's also a fan of, like Alicia and Katy. "I'm just a huge fan of them both," says Harley. "It’s just amazing to work with really creative people who are doing wonderful things that I get to enjoy their craft as well."

Stay tuned for eating and exercise tips from Harley coming to you later this week.

Apolo Ohno Opens Up to Fans Via Twitter

This afternoon I was lucky enough to participate in an interview session with the most decorated American athlete in Winter Olympic history - seven-time medalist Apolo Ohno. The speed skater was nice enough to field questions live via Twitter from his 100,000+ followers (including me!) before heading back onto the ice to train. Gotta love technology!

During the interview I learned that Apolo relaxes before a race by obsessively yawning (it also gives his lungs a bit of extra oxygen) and that despite his appearance in a McDonald's commercial, he hasn't been munching on Big Macs during the games. Check out what else I learned about the champion below.

There are no words to describe winning a medal. Apolo is nothing but smiles during the medal ceremony, saying that there's no way to really explain what it's like being up there. "[I have] many thoughts and emotions [running through my head]," says Apolo. "It's an honor to stand on that podium."

When it comes to working out, Apolo is a man of nature. Apolo's favorite way to exercise is to be outdoors, saying, "Nature is sacred!" On the top of his list is running (btw, Apolo is a sneaker freak) and biking. He also stays in shape by doing squats and leg presses.

To find out what Apolo's hidden talent is and how Team USA trains for the Olympics, read more.

Even a champion gets nervous. Even though he has a face that reflects cool determination, Apolo is only human. "Yes I get nervous - I embrace it, it's natural," confesses Apolo. "Although, these Olympics I've been very relaxed. More anxious!"

Short-track skating takes a lot of training. Apolo says that speed skating is a tough sport, and to stay on top of its game, Team USA does "tons of cross training. Weights, running, biking, jumps, hiking - you name it!"

Watch out for his other hidden talent. Besides blowing your mind on the ice, Apolo confesses that most people don't know that he has a secret talent for . . . poker! "I'm a hustler on the poker table and roulette calls my name, LOL!"

Fab Exclusive! Project Runway's Jay Talks About Second Win and Why Nina's Opinion Matters Most

Jay Nicolas Sario is proving to be quite the competitor on Project Runway. Last night, San Francisco's own had his second victory for the Hard Wear challenge. Do you agree with the winner and loser? His first win proved he's legit, and now he's further solidified his place in the competition. We had a quick chat with the designer about why he chose a garbage bag, which judge's approval he seeks most, and who his biggest competition is.

Why did you choose garbage bags over anything else?

I chose the garbage bags for no reason. All the designers were not able to sketch a design concept before going to the hardware store, so it was challenging to pick items that I had no idea what to make of. I was not in favor of the garbage bags in the beginning due to the fact that it can almost be used as a fabric, and this was a challenge that pertained to "innovation," but I still kept them just in case. My design organically came together as I worked with the materials I found and that includes a drywall self-adhesive mesh tape that I utilized to give the garbage bags structure and leather like texture. As a finishing touch, I used Gapers tape to add color onto the entire look.

To hear more from winner Jay, read more.

In your opinion, who are the strongest competitors?

Seth Aaron’s ability to consistently convey his strong point of view is threatening. He came to compete knowing what he’s made of, versus someone like me who’s still trying to identity his aesthetic as a designer. But I do feel that I have an advantage due to the sense of surprise I bring to the table each week. There’s also Emilio, who can construct a garment beautifully. But I do question his taste, and that's something I have already established and the judges recognize my sophisticated taste.

What did you think of Emilio’s design?

Emilio’s design looked like a $1.50 stripper outfit, and I thought he bought his materials from the adult store that’s literally next to the hardware store. The concept was theatrical but it looked low budget. If he had more metal washers, he would have accomplished his original design intent.

Which has been the toughest challenge yet?

The red dress challenge kicked my ass. Not only was I limited to the color red but a woman with real vital statistics. I’m talking about 40-30-39. I had no choice but to fully embrace my model's figure. I was happy in the end and at the same time wondered why I was not in the top three.

And most exciting?

The Marie Claire challenge was the most coveted of all challenges. Everyone wanted to win this challenge due to the attached price. I made a dress that moved beautifully and a lot of women who are getting married have actually been asking me to remake the dress for their wedding so it’s exciting!

Whose approval do you seek most from the judges?

Nina’s approval matters the most out of all the judges. The more Nina likes me, the better chances I have of winning the competition because, at the end of the day, she gets to chose who she wants to feature in her magazine.

Photos courtesy of Lifetime

Angela and Erin on The Office Baby - and Peeing Their Pants

It's a big day at The Office! Not only do we finally get a peek at Jim and Pam's little bundle of joy in tonight's episode, but Erin and Angela are working on a side project, too, with the latest addition to the show's online web series.

Titled "The Mentor," the videos follow Erin around as she learns the ropes of accounting under Angela's tutelage and becomes her mini me of sorts. Actors Angela Kinsey and Ellie Kemper recently sat down with reporters to discuss their new collaboration and their excitement over Baby Halpert.

Kinsey on how the baby will affect the show: "Our show is about an ensemble of people who work together. It's about Michael Scott and his co-workers. And anything else that's added to that is just a little bit of seasoning or spice; it's never the meat of a show, you know. And I think that this baby will be a little bit of seasoning sprinkled through of how it maybe is affecting Pam or Jim. But I think ultimately our show is about an office and that's what will be concentrated on."

Kinsey on how her Anne Geddes-obsessed character might dress up the Halpert baby: "I think come Christmas time I could try to make a live Nativity scene..."

To hear more tidbits from the ladies and watch a video preview of their series "The Mentor," just read more.

Kinsey on why Angela befriends Erin in "The Mentor": "I sort of feel like Angela Martin wants a friend but she's so prickly that it takes such a tall order to be her friend. But, you know, she's not - she's not a robot, you know. She misses Dwight, she misses her friends, I mean, because I think he was her best friend. And, you know, I'm sure her ladies group at church is catty."

Kinsey on a Dwight and Angela reunion: "We're geeky militant soul mates. And [Rainn and I] hope that someday they find their way back to one another."

Kemper on Erin's new Angela-inspired wardrobe: "They're tiny, tiny buttons. I feel like my fine motor skills were completely...I couldn't button them they were so small. It is weird, it's like, yeah, it's a throwback to another era I guess. I liked it, but it was only because it was for one day. I liked having my hair in a French braid. I liked being sort of like uptight I guess."

Kinsey on Angela's advice for new couple Erin and Andy: "She'd probably tell Erin like, 'Really? Andy? Really? Walk away now fool.' And then she would probably tell them, because she's hypocritical, she'd probably tell them it's highly inappropriate; you shouldn't date at work."

Kemper on breaking character: "I think it's one of the most terrible feelings to have to hold in laughter...I have a problem. I haven't done this yet, Angela, and again too much information - I wet my pants a lot when I laugh too hard...I'm shocked it hasn't happened on set because it happens like, like in improv shows. It is that thing where you're holding in laughter and it's like - it has to come out!"

Robert Pattinson Recalls 'Most Stupid Thing' He Did For 'Remember Me' - MTV Interview Part 2

Happy "Remember Me" day, everybody! But before you head to the theater to see Robert Pattinson in his first post-Edward Cullen solo project, be sure to read on for part two of our MTV Radio's interview with him for RPattz's thoughts on the film, the scenes that he found hardest to shoot and the dumbest thing he ever did.
MTV: Your character Tyler has some issues with anger, being tormented and especially his parents. Do you have any kind of new insight into why teenagers rebel like this?
Robert Pattinson: I knew a lot of teens who were troubled, and then you meet their families and you're like, "I don't know what his problem is." The families always seem really nice and supportive, and it's just this unknown. You have this energy, and you don't know where to place it. I think the reason why [Tyler] has a problem with his father and not his mother is that he knows his mother isn't strong enough to take it. If he started attacking her, she'd just break. His father is still a fighter, so he's always going to fight against him.
MTV: The movie seems very realistic in its depiction of NYU students - how much did shooting in New York with real locations help?
Pattinson: I always thought about the apartment. If this is just a typical NYU student's apartment - living in the East Village in this really nice apartment - I always thought that was a bit much. It's like a million-dollar apartment! It did help. Annoyingly, I couldn't spend as much time as I thought I could [researching the role].
MTV: Why not?
Pattinson: Before I went to New York, I thought it'd be really easy; I could hang out there and pick up on a lot of New Yorkers' mannerisms and things. But it ended up being more of a circus than I thought it was going to be.
MTV: Was it harder getting into character with all the craziness surrounding you during the shoot?
Pattinson: Kind of. At the beginning it was. But then, halfway through, I had an epiphany, and then I was fine. It's just a matter of learning how to block things out. At the beginning, it was just driving me insane. Especially with a character that's lost and supposed to be looking for [answers] all the time - and you can't look up, because then all the [paparazzi] shutters accelerate. You can't smile, you can't behave normally. You just have to be more disciplined about it.
MTV: Do you think your "Little Ashes" performance as Salvador Dalí was harmed a bit because people couldn't look at you and not think Edward Cullen?
Pattinson: I think it was. I mean, I shot it before "Twilight," but I think people do judge things differently after the "Twilight"s. But there's nothing you can really do about that. I do take it into account more now than I used to. But during the Dalí thing, when I was doing it, I didn't think anyone was ever going to see it! It's a very different place to be at when you think you're making a movie which no one is ever going to see. I mean, you're not afraid to experiment with things.
MTV: So knowing that you were famous and people would see "Remember Me," do you feel like you were able to give the film your all?
Pattinson: I don't know. I don't really know what my all is. I think I always felt very connected to it, right from the beginning when I read the script.
MTV: A lot of the anger in the film comes from your relationship with your dad, played by Pierce Brosnan. In real life, do you have a good relationship with your father?
Pattinson: My relationship with my dad is the opposite. The part was written as much more controlling, arrogant - and Pierce seems like a nice guy, so he just read the character as not a horrible man; he's not a monster. It completely changes the relationship Tyler has with him. You're looking at a [father] who you know the audience is going to be thinking, "He's all right," which I thought was quite interesting. It's this guy's rebellion against nothing. You're just attacking someone because you know they can be attacked, and he's going to keep standing afterwards. Pierce was great.
MTV: Did you enjoy the fight scenes? Is it very different than acting with words?
Pattinson: Yes, I loved it. It's completely different. I never do stuff like that, so it was quite cathartic.
MTV: Was it daunting doing those scenes with Oscar winner Chris Cooper?
Pattinson: Yeah. I don't know how I'd feel if I had any fighting back to do. I just continually get beaten up by him. [Laughs.] It's hard, especially being strangled. It's difficult to look like what's actually happening. You're doing it [for the camera] as well, so it's like you're being strangled but nothing really happens. You're just standing there, experimenting with myself. I don't really know what the face is like for someone getting strangled.
MTV: Were you hurt in that particular scene? Because it's very convincing.
Pattinson: No, not at all. But I did hurt myself in a scene they cut out, where I flipped out. [In the scene] I walked into a big confrontation and ended up getting completely destroyed by your competitor. I was doing this thing, hitting myself afterwards in a spur-of-the-moment thing, which they cut out of the movie. But I kept hitting myself so hard. I was in so much pain for the rest of the shoot. It was the most stupid thing I've ever done.
Our winner Tracy has been amazing ever since she first heard the huge news and here's a peek into her big day. She was surprised with a complete red carpet makeover! Tracy was styled head-to-toe in H&M's new Garden Collection (which isn't available in stores until March 25!), had her hair done by the Sally Hershberger Salon dream team of Rodrigo Padilla and Erin Bogart, and her flawless makeup was achieved by Benefit's global trend artist Maggie Ford Danielson- so clearly she looked incredible! Then, it was time to hit the red carpet and interview Robert Pattinson and the rest of the cast. Watch her exclusive Robert interview here.

Hitflix, TeenHollywood.com & E!online Interviews with Dakota & Kristen

Kristen Stewart and Dakota Fanning are having a blast. The duo play iconic rockers Joan Jett and Cherie Currie respectively in the new rock ‘n’ roll biopic “The Runaways” and are currently in the middle of a cross-country publicity tour. Normally, most actors would be sick and tired of constantly talking about one movie - and Stewart should know after all the hours she’s discussed the “Twilight” franchise - but you’d never know both actresses have been pushing this film since its debut at Sundance in January.
Laughing through a sit down with some assembled members of the press on Wednesday in Los Angeles, the actors discussed everything from the pressure of playing the founding members of The Runaways to their own eclectic musical tastes. More intriguing, however, was how the young stars handled questions about the on screen kiss and implied sex scene between Currie and Jett as they toured the country as teenage rockers.
Stewart notes, “It was in the script as a really fleeting thing. It was sort of also written very abstractly and vaguely. ‘Did they? Yeah, they did.’ Y’know what I mean? So, yeah and I feel it’s that way for them too. The fact it’s been called a ‘love scene’ or the fact ‘So, tell us about your romantic involvement?’ is like ‘What?’”
“I mean, I think it’s just something that happened,” Fanning adds. “I don’t even know if they have talked about it since. Y’know what I mean? It was just a thing and in the script it was just another thing. It’s not that big of a deal.”
One reporter surprisingly threw the gauntlet at Fanning asking her if she was concerned about criticism about playing a character who drinks, does drugs and has sex when she’s only 15-year-old. The actress was unequivocally ready for it.
“There is always going to be someone who doesn’t like what you are doing and doesn’t like, y’know, your movies and thinks you shouldn’t be doing [this or that] and you can never make everybody happy,” Fanning says confidently. “In this movie, I was 15 playing another 15-year-old. She went through all this when she was 15 and why am I too good that I can’t portray that when there are people everywhere younger than that going through much worse”
“We’re snorting vitamin B. C’mon,” Stewart says as laughter fills the room.
Was it good?
Stewart smiles and says, “Yeah, it was good.”

Q: Is it wonderful to have two people still alive who you can refer to for your characters or is it easier to play original characters?
Fanning: I think it’s amazing when you have the actual people there. It’s like the ultimate. I think with all characters if they were a real person you could talk to it would be amazing. When you are actually living someone’s life over for them again, it has to be so surreal and you want them to be involved as they want to be and, luckily, they wanted to be involved as we wanted them to be.
Stewart: Yeah, yeah.

Q: Did you have any hesitation about doing the singing yourself? Or do you do a lot of singing on your own?
Fanning: Not really, I don’t. I never thought of doing it any other way. I just assumed that was what would be asked of me. I dunno, I feel like you are almost cheating if you don’t actually do it. I would have felt like I was missing something.

Q: Can you talk about your own musical tastes? And what you learned about rock n’ roll attitude from Cherie and Joan?
Stewart: Ah, I think that I have a pretty varied taste in music I think. And it is primarily rock music big umbrella that I am, I am not into hip-hop. But, I do like both. This was a cool experience because there are a lot of bands that Joan is really influenced by like the Stones which she is obsessed with and just sort of obvious. Like, she listens to Zeppelin and loses her mind. And I just abbreviated both of those bands and I sound like…(Laughs.) Um, it was cool to get to know music that was just like a little bit harder or just a bit obscure. I mean Suzi Quatro is not something that is a staple of our generation. So, and in terms of being able to play Rock n’ Roll? I really, really love this movie because in many ways they were the first girl band which is crazy and people don’t know that too. And there’s an aggression and an assertiveness that comes through their music. And at the same time its so feminine. It’s a distinct aggression. It’s not a male. And I love that and that’s why the movie is cool or should be cool.

Q: Dakota, can you talk about your musical tastes and what you learned about rock ‘n’ roll?
Fanning: Well I think my musical tastes have definitely been broadened by this movie and I have really found that I can’t get out of listening to the Runaways and Joan, because it brings back the memories of the movie and I love it so much and it makes me happy. (Laughs). So, I listen to that a lot. Before that? I love music, but I’m not a huge music person. I don’t listen to a ton of music, but that’s definitely changed after doing this. And I really wanted to be a part of this to bring the Runaways to them before because I wasn’t aware of them before and I feel that’s a lot of people in our generation and I think that’s wrong.

Q: Dakota, how did you feel like doing that Ziggy Stardust inspired number at the beginning of the movie? Are you a David Bowie fan yourself?
Fanning: I am a David Bowie fan and for Cherie it was a huge part of her life, because that’s who she channeled on stage and that’ who she wanted to be and wanted to emulate. And yeah, I really loved doing that scene and that was like a dance that I had worked on with the choreographer and I had these huge bruises the next day from going down on my knees over and over again. But, it was so fun. I loved doing that and for Cherie that was sort of her moment of embracing being a weirdo and accepting that. Because she had lived her life under the shadow of her sister, her twin sister her whole life and that was her moment of stepping out and accepting she wasn’t like everyone else which I think was pretty cool.

Q: How hard was it to do the love scenes for you guys? Was it awkward at first? We are seeing something we hadn’t seen from either of you in your earlier roles.
Stewart: We never made out with a chick before? (Laughs.)
Fanning: I mean, it was only one scene. It was one day.
Stewart: It was in the script as a really fleeting thing. It was sort of also written very abstractly and vaguely. ‘Did they? Yeah, they did.’ Y’know what I mean? So, yeah and I feel it’s that way for them too. The fact it’s been called a ‘love scene’ or the fact ‘So, tell us about your romantic involvement?’ is like ‘What?’

Q: Did you improvise a little bit or have fun?
Stewart: Oh, yeah. (Laughs.)
Fanning: I mean, I think it’s just something that happened. I don’t even know if they have talked about it since. Y’know what I mean? It was just a thing and in the script it was just another thing. It’s not that big of a deal.

Q: Kristen, Joan Jett is pretty bigger than life. Was it hard to nail her down?
Stewart: She is bigger than life, that’s true and you get that from both Cherie and Joan. And I don’t know if it’s because I know them well, but you look at pictures and footage and it’s like, ‘Gosh.’ I’m sure it is because I know them and I know their dynamic and what is going on in those pictures where before they just looked really cool and awesome. And it was important - this is like the most important time of her life and she’s got a huge fanbase and she’s like the Godmother of Rock ‘N’ Roll and she’s the first woman to start her own record label. It’s a daunting figure to play and then you know her and you’re like, ‘Wow, you’re so full of like weird little…’ Because I’ve got ticks, but they are all different ticks to hers and she’s got very idiosyncratic. She’s got all these little things. (Laughs.) It was fun. She’s probably one of the most rich, vivid, dynamic people I know.

Q: Kristen, your guitar playing is pretty great in this.
(Stewart shrugs)

Q: Well, it seems to be.
Stewart: I played along…

Q: Well, you got the chord. Still today there are prejudices about young women playing an instrument. What would you say to a young girl who says, ‘I want to rock out’?
Stewart: If you have any desire, if you are like filled with compulsion…you see Joan listen to music and she just goes, ‘I have to make that noise! I have to make that noise! I have to make that.’ And people want to see that. That’s why she is so successful. Who knows why women aren’t - obviously, rock ‘n’ roll, I keep saying this, but aggressive and in a way that is sexually aggressive, like the singer is the aggressor. And people don’t want to see girls in that position. They would rather go after them. But I really feel like it’s a little different now. It’s so much easier. There are way more sort of musicians who are more - do you know what I am saying?
Fanning: That are girls? (Laughs.)
Stewart: Yeah, yeah. So, I would say just do what you need to do and if it hurts too much obviously don’t do it.

Q: Another that was pretty neat were the costumes. Were you able to keep anything?
Fanning: I kept the clothes, all the clothes I wore in the movie.

Q: Even the bustler?
Fanning: Yeah, oh, yeah. (Laughs).
Fanning: Yeah, they were really important, especially Cherie who kind of made her mark and her statement with her clothes and her make-up and her hair.

Q: How was it playing a performer where you are playing a person who is performing different than just playing a normal role where you aren’t…
Stewart: Performing? (Laughs.)

Q: Yes.
Fanning: I never played a character or sings or performs or anything and this is like double the load because you are playing a real person who performs and I was talking to someone else and they were like, ‘Yeah, I went online and compared you doing Cherry Bomb to her doing Cherry Bomb.’ So, yeah, there is that extra, not pressure, but kind of pressure to do it right.

Q: Dakota, I know ‘Hound Dog’ controversy is an old story for you, but were you concerned that people would be upset you’re playing this type of edgy, under age character again?
Fanning: Um, I again don’t want to say i don’t care, because obviously I do care. But [not] ‘She doesn’t care about her fans.’ That’s not what I mean. (Laughs.) But, at a certain point you can’t care because there is always going to be someone who doesn’t like what you are doing and doesn’t like, y’know, your movies and thinks you shouldn’t be doing [this or that] and you can never make everybody happy. In this movie, I was 15 playing another 15-year-old. She went through all this when she was 15 and why am I too good that I can’t portray that when there are people everywhere younger than that going through much worse.
Stewart: We’re snorting vitamin B. C’mon. (Laughs.)

Q: Was it good?
Stewart: Yeah, it was good. (Laughs.)

TeenHollywood.com Interview

We’re sitting at an L.A. boutique hotel getting the impression that mega-talented young actresses Kristen Stewart and Dakota Fanning have formed a real bond since playing ’70’s hard-rockin’ bandmates Joan Jett and Cherie Currie in The Runaways. The gals laugh at each other’s jokes and even rib and tease each other like old friends.

Dakota admits that she kept all of her clothes from the film including a hot bustier and fishnet hose number. The duo talks about their brief kissing scene in the film. Giggles are involved. And, Kristen advises modern teen rocker chicks to go for it! Play that guitar and don’t take no for an answer! „Do what you need to do. If it hurts too much, then you don’t want to do it enough“.

It’s a blast sitting down with these two very talented young women. It’s a casual scene. Both girls are barely wearing any jewelry or make-up (unlike their characters in the film) and the uniform of the day seems to be jeans and layered tanks topped by a checked shirt for Kristen and a silk tank top and skinny jeans for Dakota.

Where the girls seem to split fashion statements is with their shoes. Dakota is rockin’ some super high black heels and Kristen, who regularly scorns stilettos, is in ballet flats.

The young stars have bounced into our interview suite with greetings and plant themselves next to each other. Kristen is keeping the day going with a Red Bull. Let’s roll…..

TeenHollywood: Was it really helpful to have the real Joan and Cherie, the two people you played, around so you could chat with them about the roles?
Dakota: I think it’s amazing when you have the actual people there. It’s like the ultimate. With all characters, if there were a real person you could talk to, it would be amazing.
Kristen: Yeah.
Dakota: And when you are actually living someone’s life over again, for them, it has to be so surreal and you want them to be as involved as they want to be and, luckily, they wanted to be as involved as we wanted them to be.
Kristen: Yeah.

TeenHollywood: Did you have any hesitation to do the singing yourself or do you just do a lot of singing on your own?
Dakota: (laughs) Not really. I don’t. But, I think I never thought of doing it any other way. I thought that’s what would be asked of me. I feel like you’re almost cheating when you don’t actually do it. I just would have felt like I was missing something.

TeenHollywood: Talk about your own musical tastes. I read that you didn’t know anything about The Runaways. And, what did you learn in terms of rock ‘n roll by playing the parts?
Kristen: I have a pretty varied taste in music I think and it is primarily rock music; the big umbrella of what I’m into. I’m not that into hip-hop but I like both. This was a cool experience because there are a lot of bands that Joan is really influenced by that I know that are obvious; like the Stones she’s obsessed with. Just obvious stuff. Like she listens to (Led) Zeppelin and just loses her mind. (Turning to Dakota) Hey, I just abbreviated both of those bands and I sound like I know… (something). It was cool to get to know music that was just a little bit more obscure. Like Suzy Quatro is not something that is a staple of our generation.
In terms of being able to play rock ‘n roll, I don’t know, I just really love this movie because they were the first girl band. It’s crazy and people don’t know that too. There’s an aggression and an assertiveness that people didn’t want to see from girls then that comes through their music and, at the same time, it’s so feminine. It’s a distinct aggression. It’s not male. I love that and that’s why I think the movie is cool or should be cool.
Dakota: My musical tastes have definitely been broadened from this movie and I have really found that I can’t get out of listening to The Runaways and Joan because it just brings back the memories of making the movie and I love it so much and it makes me happy (she and Kristen laugh). So, I listen to that a lot.
Before that, I loved music but I’m not a huge music person. I don’t listen to a ton of music but that’s definitely changed after doing this. I really wanted to be part of this to maybe bring The Runaways to a different audience that maybe didn’t know about them before because I wasn’t aware of them before and I feel like that’s a lot of people in our generation and I think that’s wrong so (she and Kristen share another giggle).

TeenHollywood: Dakota, what was with that (David Bowie) Ziggy Stardust performance Cherie did at her school? She really bombs and we feel like ‘this poor girl’ and yet she was defiant. How did you prepare for that scene and are you a David Bowie fan?
Dakota: I am a David Bowie fan and, for Cherie, David Bowie was a huge part of her life because that’s who she channeled on stage and that’s who she wanted to be and wanted to emulate. I really loved doing that scene. That was a dance I had worked on with a choreographer. I had these huge bruises on my knees the next day from going down on my knees over and over again but it was so fun. I loved doing it.
And, for Cherie, that was her moment of embracing being kind of a weirdo and accepting that because she had lived her life in the shadow of her twin sister pretty much her whole life and that was her moment of stepping out and accepting that she wasn’t like everybody else which I think is really powerful.

TeenHollywood: How hard was it for you guys to do the „love“ scene together?
Kristen: (laughs) Love scene…

TeenHollywood: Well, kissing scene. You two have great chemistry now but was that awkward at first? That’s not something we’ve seen from either of you in earlier roles.
Kristen: I’ve never made out with a chick before (Dakota laughs). I mean it was only one scene. Literally a day. In the script it’s a really fleeting thing. It was also written very abstractly and vaguely. It was like ‘did they (kiss)?’ Yeah, they did. And I feel like it was that way for them too. The fact that it’s been called a love scene or (people say) ‘tell us about your romantic involvement’. It’s like ‘what?’

TeenHollywood: Did you have to improvise? Did you just have fun with that scene?
Kristen: (teasing voice) Oh yeah! (Dakota laughs).
Dakota: I think it’s something that just happened. I don’t know if they’ve even talked about it since. It’s just a thing and in the script it was just another thing. It wasn’t that big of a deal.

TeenHollywood: Kristen, can you talk about working with Joan to get your character down? Was that hard. She’s bigger than life it seems.
Kristen: She is bigger than life. That’s true and you get that from both Cherie and Joan. I don’t know if it’s because I know them well but you look at pictures and footage and it’s like ‘gosh, I’m sure it’s because I know them and I know their dynamic, I can see what’s going on in these pictures. Whereas, before, they may have just looked really cool. They just looked awesome.
This is the most important time of her life. She’s got a huge fanbase and she’s like the Godmother of rock ‘n roll, literally, she was the first woman to start her own record label. She’s a daunting figure to play. Then, you know her and you’re like ‘wow, you’re so full of weird, little tics’. I’ve got tics but they’re all different tics from hers. She’s very idiosyncratic. She’s got all these little things. (Dakota makes a funny face and wiggles her hands around)
Dakota: All these little things. (laughter).
Kristen: So there you go. It was fun. She’s probably one of the most rich, vivid and dynamic people I know.

TeenHollywood: Kristen, your guitar playing is great in this. (she makes a ‘no it’s not’ face). Well, it seemed to be.
Kristen: I played along.

TeenHollywood: Orianthi, a modern female rock guitarist, says she is trying to really support girls who want to play guitars and rock because, even today, the prejudice is still there against them. What would you say to young women who want to rock out?
Kristen: I feel like if you are filled with a compulsion (then follow it). You see Joan listen to music and she’s like ‘I have to make that noise! I have to make that!’ and it’s like people want to see that. That’s why she’s so successful. Who knows why women aren’t more successful?
I keep saying that rock ‘n roll is aggressive, sexually aggressive in a way. The singer is the aggressor and people don’t want to see girls in that position. They’d rather go after them.
But, I feel like times have changed. I really feel like it’s a little different now. It’s so much easier. There are way more musicians or artists that are more.. (looking to Dakota) do you know what I’m saying?
Dakota: That are girls? (laughter)
Kristen: Yeah. I would say do what you need to do and, if it hurts too much, then obviously, you don’t want to do it enough.

TeenHollywood: There are great props and costumes in the film. Did you get to keep anything?
Dakota: I kept the clothes; all the clothes that I wore.

TeenHollywood: The bustier with the fishnets and….?
Dakota: (big smile) Yeah! They were really important, especially to Cherie who kind of made her mark and her statement with her clothes, make-up and her hair.

TeenHollywood: How is playing a performer different from a normal role? There’s an extra level of performance.
Dakota: I’ve never played a character who sings or performs and this is double the load because you’re playing a real person who performs and people know these performances. I was talking to someone who said ‘yeah. I went online and compared you doing ‘Cherry Bomb’ to her doing ‘Cherry Bomb“ so there’s that extra pressure to do it right.

TeenHollywood: Dakota, people were concerned when you played a very young woman who was raped in the film Hound Dog. Are you concerned that there will be a backlash regarding this film where people will say, ‘hey, she’s still underage and playing so many ‘adult’ scenes?’
Dakota: I don’t want to say ‘I don’t care’ because, obviously, you do care.. (different voice) ‘She doesn’t care about her fans’ (Kristen is cracking up). That’s not what I mean but at a certain point, you can’t care because there’s always going to be somebody who doesn’t like what you’re doing and doesn’t like your movies and thinks you shouldn’t be doing that for some reason or another and if you pay attention to everyone, you can never make everybody happy.
In this movie, I was fifteen playing another fifteen-year-old who went through all this when she was fifteen. Why am I too good that I can’t portray that when there’s people everywhere that are even younger than that going through so much worse?
Kristen: We were snorting vitamin B. It was good stuff (laughter).

E! online Interview

The new film The Runaways is really all about „sex, drugs and rock and roll,“ as Joan Jett told us today at the Luxe Hotel for the film’s junket. (Also, it’s a must-see, totally cool.)

Let’s hit sex first: We all know by now that stars Kristen Stewart and Dakota Fanning share a big wet kiss onscreen, but that isn’t the only racy thing this film has to offer. With Dakota snorting drugs off the floor and spewing some foul language, it’s clear this film is a huge departure from the squeaky-clean New Moon, where everyone’s celibate and mopey.

Not exactly family fare here, folks.

So what do Stewart and Fanning’s own parents think about their babies going at it onscreen? We asked:

How do your parents feel about watching you act out some of these sexual and drug-infested situations? Is it hard for them?
Dakota: „One of the first movies I ever did was a pretty intense subject matter, so my parents have kind of gotten used to it by now. They know it’s just acting. They know it doesn’t come home with me.“
Kristen: [To Dakota.] „Do you find that it’s gotten easier [for our parents]? Because I find that it has.“

Why?
Kristen: „I was more nervous about it when I was younger, and it was a slow wearing down of like, ‘OK, Kristen’s going to do what she’s going to do. She’s just going to do these movies.’ Not that they were against it; I just sort of took away that projection. I sort of didn’t care anymore, you know, ‘Are you guys cool with this?’ “

Kristen and Dakota really grew up in the limelight, so we’re sure their parental units have to be OK with some of the raunchy stuff. If not, let’s hold hands and pray they get there ’cause The Runaways is gonna be a tough one to swallow.

But let’s not overshadow the fact that these two gals give amazing performances as Joan and Cherie Currie-and after you get past the shock factor that you’re watching Kristen and Dakota, you find yourself totally enthralled in the flick. Great stuff.

Still, as much as best buddies K and D loved portraying these rock stars, they aren’t quite ready to give up their day jobs.

Both women gave an emphatic „no“ when we asked if they would like to sing on future projects.
