Obama gives $1.4 million in Nobel Prize money to charities

Ten charities will split the $1.4 million awarded to President Obama as part of the Nobel Peace Prize, the White House announced today.

"These organizations do extraordinary work in the United States and abroad, helping students, veterans and countless others in need," Obama said in a statement. "I'm proud to support their work."

The charities work on such issues as housing for veterans, college assistance and economic development in Africa and Central Asia. The Clinton-Bush Haiti Fund is a recipient.

Here's the full list, as provided by the White House:

$250,000 to Fisher House

Fisher House is a national non-profit organization that provides housing for families of patients receiving medical care at major military and Veterans Administration medical centers.

$200,000 to the Clinton-Bush Haiti Fund

In the wake of the devastating earthquake in Haiti, Obama asked former presidents George W. Bush and Bill Clinton to create the Clinton-Bush Haiti Fund to raise money for long-term relief efforts in Haiti.

$125,000 to College Summit

College Summit is a national non-profit organization that partners with high schools to strengthen college-going culture and increase college enrollment rates, so all students graduate from high school ready for college and a career.

$125,000 to the Posse Foundation

The Posse Foundation is a national non-profit organization that identifies public high school students with extraordinary academic and leadership potential who may be overlooked by traditional college selection processes. Posse's college and university partners award scholars four-year, full-tuition leadership scholarships. The scholars graduate at a rate of 90%.

$125,000 to the United Negro College Fund

The United Negro College Fund plays a critical role in enabling more than 60,000 students each year to attend college through scholarship and internship programs.

$125,000 to the Hispanic Scholarship Fund

The Hispanic Scholarship Fund (HSF) is the nation's leading Hispanic scholarship organization, providing Hispanics more college scholarships and educational outreach support than any other organization in the country. In its 34-year history, the Hispanic Scholarship Fund has awarded close to $280 million in scholarships to more than 90,000 students.

$125,000 to the Appalachian Leadership and Education Foundation

A non-profit organization funded by foundations and companies, ALEF supports and enables young men and women from Appalachia to pursue higher education though scholarship and leadership curriculum.

$125,000 to the American Indian College Fund

The American Indian College Fund transforms Indian higher education by funding and creating awareness of the unique, community-based, accredited tribal colleges and universities, offering students access to knowledge, skills and cultural values that enhance their communities and the country as a whole. The fund disburses approximately 6,000 scholarships annually for American Indian students seeking to better their lives through higher education. The fund also provides support for tribal college needs, ranging from capital support to cultural preservation curricula.

$100,000 to AfriCare

AfriCare was founded in 1970 and has more projects in Africa than any other U.S.-based charity, reaching communities in 25 countries, primarily in sub-Saharan Africa. Its programs address needs in three principal areas: health and HIV/AIDS; food security and agriculture; and water resource development.

$100,000 to the Central Asia Institute

The Central Asia Institute promotes and supports community-based education and literacy, especially for girls, in remote regions of Pakistan and Afghanistan. The institute's co-founder, Greg Mortenson, was also a Nobel Peace Prize nominee this year. His book, Three Cups of Tea: One Man's Mission to Promote Peace, One School at a Time, recounts his attempt to successfully establish dozens of schools and promote girls' education in rural Afghanistan and Pakistan.

Sugar friends help! In need of suggestions for a cover letter.

As some of you know I am in my last year in college and I'm searching for jobs. Ack, I know. Anyhow I have been working on my cover letter but because I am on my spring break, campus buildings are closed; therefore I can't visit the career center to as for suggestions. That is why I'm here.

I am applying for a fashion internship for one of my local magazine, and I could use for advice on how to improve my cover letter.

Here is the cover letter for the position: (Note: I have put blank spaces to any facts that show where I live. Other sugar members knowing what I look like from my recent post is enough. Lol. )

Fashion and journalism are two passions of mine since my early teen years. I have shown immense interests for fashion through my writing. You can even say I live and breath fashion and writing.

I am applying for the summer fashion internship position at ________ Magazine. I found out about this great opportunity through the magazine’s website. I chose _________ Magazine because of its coverage on the city’s culture and lifestyle.

I have four years of journalistic experience in both magazine and newspaper. I am currently a volunteer staff writer for a ________ University newspaper called __________. As a staff writer, I have had the opportunity to show my creative side by pitching in stories of my own such as the places to shop and dine in ________, a campus fashion show and a jazz series program held at the _______ Public Library. What I want is hard-hitting criticism. No "Oh good cover letter Pinkflats." I don't really want any of that. Let me know what you think. If you found incorrect spelling or grammar, tell me. This is a matter of life and death for me. Well okay that's was over the top.

I think my issue is that it's a bit long for a cover letter. No?

It's my last semester as a college student; I'm currently enrolled in six classes; I'm doing 12 hours of internship each week; I'll spending a lot of time sending out my resumes/inquiring for work; and I just got hired to continue working for a retail store (I was first a seasonal/holiday sales associate) as a part-time position. It's all work and no play for miss pinkflats.

Sadly this would mean it will take me away from Sugar. In fact today was just my first day of classes, I got home and I was so exhausted that it took about three hours to get me to type this blog. (It doesn't help I'm currently experiencing writer's block right now; not good since I have feature story to write for a class. Blah.)

So just letting know those who keep up with my groups that I won't be blogging much (boo hoo for The Sartorialist group) or commenting on other people's blogs. This is a big one because I get an average of 15 messages each day, all of them letting me know my friends have posted blogs. Add them all up each week and THAT'S a lot to reply to so I apologize if I don't read or comment on your blog. I will, however, try to find time to just stop by and say hello to my dear friends.

Lastly, keeping up with my 5 New Year's Goals I've achieved one of them and I will hopefully achieved another:

1. I got a weekly planner to keep my organized so hopefully by the end of the semester I'm as organized as I know I could be...well at least for the sake of my sanity.

2. I got bangs! They're not too heavy as what the photos suggested in my previous post. I think as someone who got straight bangs for the first time in 12 years, it's just the right length and style.

What I'll be wearing the first day of my internship...

I tried to come up with a look that looks feminine and elegant without giving the impression that I tried too much. After all, I don't want to look like a little girl playing dress-up, do I? The company where I'll be doing an internship employs a lot of young people and it's in the creative branche of business so there is no need for an overly formal outfit. What do you think? I'll be pairing the outfit with my leather jacket which you can see on the right, hanging on the door. purple skirt: Zara cardigan: Vero Moda black t-shirt and black tights: H&M boots: Essentiel
