At the end of the tax year the IRS office sent an inspector to audit the books of a Synagogue.
While he was checking the books he turned to the Rabbi and said, 'I notice you buy a lot of candles. What do you do with the candle drippings?'

'Obscure Tea-Bagging Operation'
http://www.futureofcapitalism.com/2009/11/obscure-tea-bagging-operation
The Goldman Sachs-funded business news watchdog blog at the Columbia Journalism Review goes after a fellow non-profit news organization, ProPublica, for a ProPublica article on wasteful stimulus spending. Columbia Journalism Review criticizes ProPublica for using a quotation from a spokeswoman for Citizens Against Government Waste, which Columbia Journalism Review sneeringly and condescendingly and dismissively and, well, offensively, characterizes as "some obscure tea-bagging operation." Citizens Against Government Waste has been around since 1984, and its 2007 IRS Form 990 indicates it had revenue and expenses of about $4.4 million, more if you include an affiliated 501(c)4 group.

A little-noticed measure would put Christian Science healing sessions on the same footing as clinical medicine. Critics say it violates the separation of church and state.
By Tom Hamburger and Kim Geiger
Backed by some of the most powerful members of the Senate, a little-noticed provision in the healthcare overhaul bill would require insurers to consider covering Christian Science prayer treatments as medical expenses.

A Texas retiree has become a cause celebre for a satirical letter he wrote his hometown paper, saying he can't pay his taxes - and asking the IRS to treat him like famous tax cheats.
"Dear IRS," Ed Barnett wrote the Wichita Falls (Texas) Times Record News in February. "I am sorry to inform you that I will not be able to pay taxes owed April 15, but all is not lost."

'Values Voter Summit' or GOP Rally?
Last weekend's 'Values Voter Summit' in Washington could have been mistaken for a sort of off-year, off-brand Republican National Convention. Headliners included 15 current or former Republican elected officials or Cabinet members and no Democrats.

I've been working at my company for over 4 years. For a while I seemed to be learning and growing (and I was even promoted). Unfortunately the past year and a half have been frustrating.

Party of Medi-Scare? [Tevi Troy]
Bruce Bartlett has a piece in Forbes criticizing the GOP for becoming the party of Medicare. His argument is that while Republicans initially opposed Medicare and have long criticized it, the combination of President Bush backing prescription drug coverage under Medicare in the Medicare Modernization Act (MMA) and RNC Chair Michael Steele's recent Senior Bill of Rights, which opposes paying for President Obama's health reform with Medicare cuts, indicate that the GOP has sold out to seniors on this issue.A few points need to be made in response. First, Bartlett is right that Republicans are no longer inveterate Medicare bashers.
