I'm Asking: Where Has Your Work Been?

As much as we try to avoid it, sometimes we can't escape bringing our work with us when we're away from home. Most recently, my work came with me on a trip to Los Angeles, but the most inappropriate place my work has been was a camping ground in Northern California (believe me, my friends gave me plenty of flack about this one). Many of us have traveled during the last month or so, and I'm curious if your job managed to make it along on your holiday. Where has your work been?

Source

Definition: Money Disorder

Financial therapy is a relatively new area of psychology that is designed to treat money disorders. After squandering most of her fortune, Wynonna Judd sought out financial therapy and says of her experience, "If I can do it, anyone can. I’m in absolute financial recovery. I live by cash only, by cash budget. I’ll go into Target with a money envelope." According to the New York Times, money disorders treated in recent years have included the following conditions.

Overspending

Underspending (Depression mentality)

Serial borrowing

Financial infidelity

Workaholism

Financial incest (lording money over relatives to control them)

Financial enabling (for example, throwing large sums at adult children who then are not motivated to support themselves)

How Do You Know If You're a Workaholic?

Workaholic is one of those words that's thrown around frequently, but have you ever stopped to think about what it really means? Working compulsively is a serious problem for many people, especially now that technology allows us access to our work at all times. The questions below come from the Workaholics Anonymous website, and it notes that you may be a workaholic if you answer yes to three or more questions.

Do you get more excited about your work than about family or anything else?

Are there times when you can charge through your work and other times when you can't?

Do you take work with you to bed? On weekends? On vacation?

Is work the activity you like to do best and talk about most?

Do you work more than 40 hours a week?

Do you turn your hobbies into money-making ventures?

Do you take complete responsibility for the outcome of your work efforts?

Have your family or friends given up expecting you on time?

Do you take on extra work because you are concerned that it won't otherwise get done?

Do you underestimate how long a project will take and then rush to complete it?

Ten more, so just read more

Do you believe that it is okay to work long hours if you love what you are doing?

Do you get impatient with people who have other priorities besides work?

Are you afraid that if you don't work hard you will lose your job or be a failure?

Is the future a constant worry for you even when things are going very well?

Do you do things energetically and competitively including play?

Do you get irritated when people ask you to stop doing your work in order to do something else?

Have your long hours hurt your family or other relationships?

Do you think about your work while driving, falling asleep or when others are talking?

Do you work or read during meals?

Do you believe that more money will solve the other problems in your life?

Interview Tip: Rework Your Workaholic Answer

You may go above and beyond to get your job done, but stay away from using the word workaholic in a job interview. When you're asked about a workplace weakness, employers want to hear something more thoughtful than a contrived answer suggesting you will put their company at the top of your priorities. Even if you're truly a workaholic, but many employers would see it as a cop-out answer that doesn't indicate much about your ability to do the job.

Instead, try approaching the weakness question with a productive answer. The Wall Street Journal spoke with a New York psychologist who gave a great example of what I'm referring to: He recommended saying something like, "My weakness is I get bored by routine," as an example of how to respond when interviewing with a start-up. This technique can easily be applied to any position you're after.

Source

Travel Therapy Prescribes Trips For Your Troubles

When the going gets tough, all I want to do is get away. Vacations can be effective for clearing your head when the stress of every day becomes overwhelming, and most importantly, they allow you to enjoy life without a schedule. Some people know exactly where they'd go for their next vacation, but others might want a little more guidance for a trip that matches their specific emotional needs.

Travel Therapy: Where Do You Need to Go? ($14), written by Karen Schaler, is a double-duty travel guide - not only does it offer descriptions of possible destinations, it contains tools to determine which trip is the right fit for you. There are 11 chapters in all, and each one offers a different scenario. For example, chapter one is "Heartbreak Hotel" and appeals to people who've gone through a breakup. It suggests three different types of trips, then has a travel therapy quiz and diagnosis, and suggests destinations in detail.

There are even remedies for the burnt-out workaholic . . . sound like anyone you know?

News Flash: Delta to Offer Wi-Fi on Domestic Flights

Whether you're a workaholic or just into efficiency, Delta's news will have you jumping for joy. Let's hope that other airlines follow Delta's lead and start offering in-flight Wi-Fi. A flat fee of $9.95 will be charged on flights of three hours or less, and $12.95 on longer flights. - CNN Money

Six Flags is in big financial trouble as consumers haven't been spending their disposable income on rollercoaster rides this Summer. - The Wall Street Journal

Homeowners with good credit are falling behind on their payments and mortgage lenders are fearful this means more defaults are in the near future. - The New York Times

I'm Asking: Where Does Your Job Fall on Your List of Priorities?

I'll admit that it can be difficult to tear me away from work at times, and my BlackBerry and laptop (gasp!) went camping with me last weekend. I know I'm not the only one that has issues with this, but I also know that you don't have to have workaholic tendencies for your job to be a high priority in your life. So, where does your job fall on your list of priorities? Somewhere between your relationship and your friends? Top or bottom of your list? Do tell!
