It's true what they say: you should never go grocery shopping on an empty stomach. Even though I know better, sometimes I find myself wandering the aisles with a grumbling stomach, and before I know it, my basket is full. It's a good thing Trader Joe's helps keep my costs down.

Grocery stores like Ralph's that stay open 24 hours a day give us the option of shopping at any hour. This means we're not cornered into going when it's convenient for everyone else, too, and you don't feel rushed while comparison shopping your way down the aisles. When you shop at an odd time, you're more likely to make good decisions about what to buy.

Every time I visit Trader Joe's, I leave with a few things that I can't wait to try for the first time. Discovering new delicious items is good insurance against the temptation of eating out. I dine out much less than I used to but the food in my belly is certifiably tasty, so I'm a happy camper who's saving more on food.

Thanks to Ralph's, I'm starting to be a self-checkout pro. It kind of channels the kid in you that once enjoyed playing "store." I picked up just a bag-full of items on my last trip to the grocery store, which is the perfect type of trip for using the self-checkout.

It's hard not to like a supermarket that has its own stack of Jelly Belly bins. Ralph's (operated by Kroger) has some issues with organization that can be a little frustrating, but my local store is always clean and you can count on stocked shelves. Can you guess what I spent on some items during a recent shopping trip?

I'm not shy about my love for Trader Joe's. Grocery shopping at TJ's is good for buying the old standbys and also new products — the quality there is consistent, so I don't feel like I'm taking too much of a risk by buying things for the first time. I know the store doesn't have locations in every part of the country, but can you guess how much some of the items cost on my last trip to Trader Joe's?

When you realize you're snacking your way through every meal, it's time to go to the grocery store. Now that I have some ingredients around, there will be actual meals in the near future, namely black bean chili (it's chilly again in San Francisco) and caprese crepes. Can you guess how much some of the items I bought at Safeway cost?

Even though I've made countless trips to the grocery store, sometimes I'm still surprised when certain things cost more than others. Some things sold for a premium totally baffle me, while less expensive items seem like they should cost more for how versatile they are. Let's get back to basics with supermarket items.

When only four items on a long grocery receipt are full-priced, you know that you've saved some good money on your grocery bill. This was the case with my most recent trip to Safeway, when nearly every item I bought was discounted from its normal price. Score.

This time of year it feels like I'm constantly at the grocery store. Between baking and cooking dishes to bring to parties or hosting my own guests, it seems there's always something that I need to pick up. These expenses add up, but luckily there seem to be a lot of grocery deals lately.
