It might seem cruel, but time after time I've heard hiring managers admit they decide whether or not an applicant is suited for the job 15 minutes into the interview. Chemistry plays a huge part in the success of an initial meeting, and while you may not be able to control the laws of nature, you can certainly follow the rules of what not to do. I don't love to carry around a lot of extra stuff in my bags, so on weekends, I typically ditch my work BlackBerry at home, and take just my personal on the go with me. I actually made a point when I first started at my company to keep my personal BlackBerry as a separate entity. I know co-workers and friends who would totally disagree, but having separate devices actually helps to create a little distance between me and the office when I don't need to be in touch.

Working with colleagues every day and sharing space means we only have a certain amount of privacy at work. Whether we like it or not, co-workers will occasionally look over your shoulder to get a glimpse of your screen or paperwork. Every job is different, but most bosses seek the same set of basic characteristics in their employees. You can wipe out some of the stress your manager causes by learning and anticipating her quirks, understanding her expectations, and talking to her about shared goals and needs. Get a head start by making sure you are radiating these attributes in the workplace.
