Some Prenups Expanding to Include Health Insurance Clauses

Prenuptial agreements are traditionally designed to dictate what will happen with a couple's finances in case of divorce, and now they're expanding to include some clauses for other money-related issues.

Health care is something that's already pushing some couples to the altar; in just the past year, seven percent of adults in the US married for health insurance. Insurance doesn't come cheap and it can be difficult to find good coverage that isn't very expensive - that's why some couples are designing prenups with a clause allowing for continued health insurance should they divorce.

The appearance of these clauses suggests health care is a big worry for those looking to the future. What do you think of the inclusion of health insurance in prenups?

Prenups Are Legally Binding, But Not Everywhere

Charlotte's first Sex and the City husband, Trey McDougall, comes from Scottish blood, but he'd probably be a proponent of the UK Law Commission's discussion to make prenuptial agreements legally binding.

Americans are no strangers to the legal contracts that outline the division of assets in case of divorce, while couples in the UK haven't been operating under the same options. Remember when Paul McCartney paid Heather Mills a settlement of $48.6 million as the result of an intense divorce proceeding? The exhausting process and enormous payout could have been avoided if English courts recognized prenups.

Opponents of legally binding prenups are concerned about a higher divorce rate, but proponents argue that without these contracts some couples aren't getting married at all, especially if they've had a previous marriage. There's plenty of time to argue; The Law Commission plans on publishing a drafted bill in 2012 and its projected that it would be 2014 before any law passes.

Prenuptial agreements among Hollywood's couples awaiting the walk down the aisle generally don't cause much of a stir, but when it comes to engaged couples who aren't among the rich and famous prenups seem to have a thicker haze surrounding them. Those asked to sign tend to think their loved ones are asking them to put a value on themselves, and what's more, they're calling the future of the marriage into question. Some are more sensitive than others though, as there are some among the newly engaged who think a prenup is sensible with such high divorce rates as a reality. Where do you fall? How would you feel if your fiancé mentioned a prenup as part of the deal?

Was the McCartney-Mills Divorce Settlement Fair?

Paul McCartney and Heather Mills finally settled their divorce this week. She began the process requesting $254 million but ended up getting $48.6 million from the settlement. There was no prenuptial agreement involved when the couple married in 2002, and while Heather had some of her own acquired wealth it came no where close to the $800 million that Paul has in his Beatles name.

After the settlement was finalized, Heather said, “It was an incredible result in the end, to secure mine and my daughter’s future and that of all the charities that I obviously plan on helping and making a difference with - because, you know, it has been my life for 20 years.” However, her behavior in the courtroom suggested that she wasn't as happy with the results as she let on. The former model poured a glass of water over the head of Paul McCartney's attorney, Fiona Shackleton, and left her head soaking wet. And I don't think she was channeling sports teams that pour Gatorade over their coach's head when they win a big game.

Employers Asking Coupled Co-Workers to Sign Love Contracts

According to ABC News, some employers are requiring romantically involved workers to sign "love contracts" that defines the nature of their relationships. Tory Johnson, workplace contributor for "Good Morning America," explained the reasoning for these contracts when she said, "Think of it in terms of a prenup. You're getting married. Someone basically [is] saying, 'We're happy. We hope it rules out. If it doesn't, we know what the rules will be.' In this particular case, you're saying to the employer, 'We'll prevent you from being held responsible for employment issues in the event of a failed personal relationship.' The employer should not have that burden. "
