Feb 11 2009 - 11:30am Olympic champion Michael Phelps became the poster child for many eager brands after his unprecedented success in the Beijing 2008 Games, but there's one company who no longer wants its products associated with the swimmer.
After the golden boy's bong drama unraveled last week, most of you thought companies would be overreacting if they pulled Phelps' endorsement deals. Kellogg is the only company that has made the decision to not renew the swimmer's contract that expires at the end of this month with the explanation that his behavior is "not consistent with the image of Kellogg."
Based on my informal observations (via Facebook, ha) it seems that for every person who says "Good, he's not a good role model, they should drop him," there's another one who says "It's
stupid that pot is illegal, plenty of upstanding people smoke up, Kellogg's is being close-minded." So they'll gain some customers and lose some, but I can't imagine they'll see much of a
change.
Considering that Kellogg's charges $4 a box or more for stupid cereal that you could buy generically for $1.50 a box, I don't think they're hurting for money.
i guess kellogs needs celebrities to get uninformed kids to force their helpless parents into paying for this overpriced simple-carb food product. not that i dont enjoy cornflakes.
