Who Has the Longest and Shortest Commutes in the US

Southern California is notorious for its insane traffic; drivers there might be pulling out their hair, but the average commuting time is surprisingly not the worst in the nation. The US Census Bureau declared that commuters from East Stroudsburg, PA spend the longest time getting to work, averaging 40.6 minutes each way, typically driving to their jobs in the NYC area.

Other commuters who work in NYC can empathize; residents in White Plains, NY and Wayne, NJ have the second-longest commute, averaging 36.9 minutes. Those times are much greater than the national average of 25.5 minutes. On the flip side, the shortest commute goes to Grand Forks, ND where workers drive an average 14.3 minutes to work, followed by Cheyenne, WY (14.9 minutes) and Roswell, NM (15.7 minutes).

Unless your home is your office, we all have a commute to get to work. The weak job market has caused many workers to take jobs hours away from their homes, which means very long commutes or even living in another city during the week.

Commuting is a daily part of life, but thankfully it seems Savvy readers don't spend too much time heading to and fro (32 percent of you say you are on the road for about a half hour).

We keep hearing that commuters' quality of life is going down the pump, so I want to know what your style is. Do you take a plane, train, or automobile to work?

In what seems like a counterproductive way of living, workers are funneling more money from their paychecks into their gas tanks so they can get to and from the office.

CareerBuilder asked commuters to identify the ways they have modified their spending habits to afford a full tank of gas, and surveying the answers makes one thing clear: Americans, and especially commuters, have a reduced quality of life because of expensive fuel. It seems dining out is the first thing to go for most of the respondents; below are the ways people are making it work when they have to drive to work. Has the cost of commuting taken a toll on your quality of life?

Eating out less - 35 percent
Spending less on entertainment - 31 percent
Buying less expensive groceries - 27 percent
Shopping for clothes less - 24 percent
Not going on vacation - 21 percent
Eliminating cable, magazine subscriptions, etc. - 11 percent
Not attending a function where they would be expected to bring a gift - 9 percent
Cutting back on their child's extracurricular activities - 4 percent

Your Two Cents: Could You Be a Commuter Couple?

When I asked about the length of your commute last month the majority of you said your commute was about a half hour which I think is totally manageable. But what if your husband had to work several hours away, Monday through Friday? A 2006 U.S. Census Bureau survey says that 3.2 million married Americans (including military families) live in different homes. Some two-income households accept the commute if one would otherwise lose their job, and that way neither person has to sacrifice a successful career.

Your Two Cents: How Does Your Commute Compare?

I'm a sucker for statistics that show how many days we spend each year sleeping, brushing our teeth, sitting in traffic, etc. Did you know that New Yorkers spend about a week each year traveling to their jobs? They spend about 38 minutes a day commuting, while it takes about 25 minutes for most Americans to get to work.

I was surprised to find that the average San Francisco commute is slightly longer - or was longer, the Census data is a bit dated - than commuting in Los Angeles. Whenever I'm visiting L.A., I feel like a quarter of my trip is spent in traffic!
So, how long does it take you to get to work?

Whether you love heading into work every day or dread the alarm each morning, hearing about people who love what they do is always inspiring. In our new Savvy series, Cool Jobs, we’ll talk to real women who have turned their passion into a very cool career.

Oakland native Nina LaCour always knew she wanted to be a writer, but over the past two years, she’s made that dream a reality. Nina’s debut young adult novel, Hold Still, was released by Dutton (a division of Penguin) last week, and she’s already signed on for a second novel.

Tell us what a typical day looks like for you.
I teach high school in the mornings, so my workday begins at 7:45. For a few hours, I sit around a big table with between 10 and 14 students per class and talk about books. When I get home I need a little while to wind down from teaching, so I use that time to answer interview questions for YA bloggers and get in touch with my agent or the people at Penguin about book stuff. They are all in New York, and I'm in California, so these calls have to take place early in my day.

No matter how often I do it, it takes me a little while to settle into writing. Usually I'll begin by reading over my newer scenes or notes. I also keep an ever-changing outline up on my wall, so I keep track of what I've written and what I need to write, and I'll cross scenes out if I decide that I'm taking a different direction. And then, finally, I start typing. I'm a slow writer, so on a good day I'll get one or two pages written. On a slow day I might just end up revising existing scenes or writing a bunch of notes, or working forever on one important paragraph.
