When It Pays to Count Cash

Ask any career coach, interviewer, friend, or even stylist, and they'll tell you confidence is the number one thing that will give you an edge and make you stand out. Traditionally, confidence before an interview comes from thorough preparation, conviction that you have what it takes, and an outfit that makes you look the part, but a recent study suggests you might want to add a step to your pre-interview checklist.

According to a new study published in the journal Psychological Science, counting cash "can reduce emotional and physical pain as well as increase feelings of internal strength, fearlessness and confidence." One of the study's authors, Roy Baumeister of Florida State University, translated the study's conclusions into real life application and said, "It might be handy to sit down and count a stack of money before going out to the job interview."

I wonder if flipping through a wad of Monopoly cash would have the same effect. What do you think of Baumeister's recommendation?

Woman Mistakenly Throws Out Mom's $1 Million Life Savings

Cash might be king, but one Israeli woman might have taken that idea too far. Unbeknown to her thoughtful daughter, Anat, the elderly woman had been stashing her life savings inside her mattress. When Anat surprised her mother with a new mattress and took it upon herself to discard the old one, it was revealed that she'd also thrown away $1 million cash.

The mattress had already been taken as garbage when Anat discovered her costly mistake. She's been frantically searching various landfills for the mattress without luck so far - one dump manager indicated the search would be difficult because 2,500 tons of trash are dropped at his site each day. Her mom might have a new mattress, but a good night's sleep might not be in the cards for a while.

Money Tip: Consider Going Cash Only Over the Weekend

The weekend has a way of threatening my spending plan quite often, probably because it's tough for me to say no to an evening with friends that sounds like fun. Because the weekend tends to throw me off my spending game, I'm trying something new to reign in my bad habits from Friday through Sunday.

While I don't typically operate on a cash-only system, I'm giving it a go for weekends only. By restricting myself to a certain amount of cash, I'll have to make harder choices about what gatherings are worth attending and which can be skipped. Plus, I'll put effort into finding tasty and fun alternatives to the more expensive options.

Do you think going cash only on the weekends could be a spending solution for you?

Family Finds $10,000 in Organic Crackers Box

Holding onto money is everyone's goal these days, yet one honest California family was eager to give back the envelope filled with $100 bills found in a box of crackers. Whole Foods is notorious for costly groceries that eat up our paychecks, but the Rogoff family unknowingly left the store $10,000 richer.

Instead of depositing the found money into a bank account, the Rogoffs called the police to report the booty found in a box of Annie's Sour Cream and Onion Cheddar Bunny crackers. Police suspected the cash to be part of a drug drop until they heard from a Whole Foods manager calling on behalf of a customer claiming she left her life savings in a box of mistakenly returned crackers.

The woman no longer trusted banks and chose the box of crackers as the hiding place for her savings. Lucky for her, Whole Foods accidentally restocked the box of crackers rather than throwing them away and the Rogoffs did the ethical thing and didn't keep the cash as their own. Would you have made the same decision?

I'm Asking: Do You Expect to Receive Cash For the Holidays?

As we get older, it's harder for parents and extended family members to select gifts for us, and many of my friends have said they've come to expect to receive cash for the holidays. Usually, cash is given with the intent that you'll spend it on something that you've chosen for yourself and that you love. It takes the pressure off of family members and they're able to essentially give you what you wanted.

Do you think you'll receive cash this year? If so, what will you do with it?
