Reader Advice: How to Look Good For Less at Work

An anonymous community member recently posted on our Savvy Confessions group asking for ideas on how to look good at work without overspending. Reader EvieJ chimed in with her thoughts:

You need to get a capsule wardrobe . . .

First thing to do is pick a couple of neutral shades (black and grey, navy and khaki, black and khaki or similar). Then pick a couple of accent colors.

Get yourself 2 pairs of pants (same style) and a couple of skirts (different styles) in your neutrals, and a jacket in one of your neutral colors. (Here's where the black suit is a godsend.) Get yourself a dress either in a solid neutral, or a patterned accent color (or a neutral mixed with one of your accent colors - but a wrap dress is universally flattering). Buy 2 shirts, one in each of your accent colors, plus one really good white shirt. One neutral cardigan, one accent cardigan.

That's 11 items of clothing right there.

Get yourself a pair of heels or 2 in black or navy, depending upon which one you've chosen as a neutral. Flats can be good, but heels just look more polished, to me (my opinion only!).

Now, get out a camera and starting mixing up what you have.

Play with accessories you already have, and you'll be amazed at all the different looks you can pull together.

When you start getting paychecks you can start buying more clothes, but always try to stay with the colors you've chosen so you don't have random things that don't go with anything else.

As for where to shop: consignment shops, Target (great for black trousers), Kohls, Zara (if there's one near you), Mango (again, if there's on near you). You can also try places like eBay, the RealReal, and similar online.

What to Wear to Work

Thankfully, the rules of business dressing are not how they used to be. While I do love a classic secretary suave look - à la Banana Republic's Mad Men-inspired silhouettes - I think the modern day woman is fortunate to have a little bit more flexibility with her wardrobe. The level of freedom depends, of course, on the type of work environment you're in.

For instance, if you are someone in a corporate setting, you should aim to build your wardrobe all around a great suit! Find one that fits perfectly (or have it tailored) in black, gray, or another neutral, then wear it a million different ways. The idea is that when you invest in a full suit, you can break it up and incorporate each piece - a jacket, vest, pants, pencil skirt, etc. - with what you already have in your closet. Try something as simple as wearing your suit jacket over a white blouse and pair of jeans, then punch it up with an accessory or two.

read more. I say yes to jeans at work because I think they have come a long way from their casual origin. Just make sure if you do decide to wear denim into the office to keep it very clean and crisp in a black or dark blue wash. Remember, you're replacing proper trousers so don't wear anything too tight or too baggy. When picking out what to wear on top, always aim for understated blouses or button-ups in classic solid colors - I love white and cream - or subtle patterns . . . the three Ps: paisleys, polka dots, and pinstripes! As far as shoes go, you are always on the right track with a sturdy heel or wedge - open-toe is fine as long as your toes have been pedicured! - but avoid at all costs wearing your tranny pumps with shorts or a miniskirt. Also, for all of you women who walk to work in your sneakers with a suit - remember Working Girl? - may I please offer that you wear instead a pair of ballet flats or flat boots? They are just as comfy as sneakers and astonishingly more chic! Now for my ladies who work in a more creative field, I say almost anything goes . . . don't be afraid to cross over your social attire with your work attire. Just keep in mind a few guidelines and you can't go wrong . . . 1. Don't wear flip-flops ever 2. Don't wear short shorts or micro minis 3. Do wear skinny jeans, but balance them out with a very appropriate top 4. Choose your accessories wisely. That is, if you wear a statement necklace, don't overdo it with the rest of your jewelry. Lastly, if you are ever unsure about something, just trust your gut instinct and remember that overt sexiness is never cool in a work environment. Keep your look classy and sophisticated with a personal touch through accessories and you will always close the deal. xoRZ

I'm Asking: What Do You Wear to Work on Fridays?

Casual Friday is reinstituted at Dunder-Mifflin on last night's episode of The Office, now that Michael is back in charge. Angela hates it because she thinks everyone looks inappropriate, and is especially bent out of shape about Oscar's sandals. Michael's interpretation of casual Friday is a hoodie, t-shirt, and jeans, Pam and Phyllis show up in the same khaki pants and purple plaid shirt, Meredith rocks a skimpy tube dress (with no underwear), and Kelly shows off her street style in overalls, metallic boots, and a hat.

How to Dress For Interview Success During the Recession

If you asked your grandmother for interview fashion tips, she'd probably advise to "dress for the job you want, not the job you have," but the professionals seem to think now is the time to simply play it safe. Wearing casual or unusual clothes in times of economic success can be a positive because it gives the impression you're a risk-taker, but that's not what employers are looking for given the current market.

Sandy Ruddock, who is the founder of image consultants Public i, recommends plain dark suits and white shirts for men and a simple jacket, skirt and blouse combo for a woman. My general rule for interview attire is to dress one step up from the company's dress code (unless of course their dress code is extremely formal). So, if employees adhere to business casual guidelines, you should wear a suit for your interview.

I think it's most important to focus on the overall success of your interview and the things you shouldn't do, but it's clear first impressions go a long way. What would you wear if you had an interview right now?
