2009 Is the Year of Cheap Lingerie

This economy has made a lot of people appreciative of the really important things in life, like spending time with loved ones. While I'm perfectly content spending my Valentine's Day in my apartment with my Valentine and a home cooked meal, there are plenty of cupids who can't forget traditionally risque gifts like lingerie or tiny tokens like a card acknowledging the day.

You don't need to look much further than this year's Internet search stats to recognize the trends for 2009: Yahoo! reports that searches for "Free Valentine's Day cards" have increased 788 percent from last year and "cheap lingerie" searches are up 370 percent. Those looking for inexpensive lingerie might want to modify their search words if they're looking for a discount and not "cheap" looking undergarments, yes?

If you want to celebrate with your Valentine by sharing a nice meal out, but are worried about the mark-ups some restaurants charge on the holiday, a solution may be to celebrate on Friday the 15th. You won't have to deal with paying extra for the same plate of food. Added bonus - you'll miss the crowds of couples! Exchange cards and rent a movie together on the 14th, and save your cute dinner outfit for Friday.

News Flash: Valentine's Day Spending Up From Last Year

A study released by the National Retail Federation (NRF) shows that consumers plan to spend an average $122.98 on Valentine's Day. That's more than the average was last year and total retail spending is estimated to reach $17.02 billion. Men are projected to outspend women this year dishing out an average of $163.37, while it's estimated that women will spend an average of $84.72. I'm taking it easy this year and will be making a nice dinner at home with my Valentine, so we'll definitely be falling below the average.

Free Dinner With Proof of Pink Slip

Recession happy hours have been staples at many drinking holes for several months now, and following in-trend may be pink slip freebie promotions. When I heard about a popular San Francisco restaurant offering a free meal to laid-off locals the day after Valentine's, I thought this could certainly be a trend in the making.

Restaurants are hungry for business, and those who have been handed pink slips are likely to jump at a free meal - and drag their employed (paying) friends along for the ride. This particular Pink Slip Sunday promotion is doubly smart, as most people eat at home on Sundays and especially the day after a dinner-date holiday. What do you think of the gimmick; will we see it more often as the job ax continues to fall?

Experian Denies Consumers Access to Credit Scores

As of Valentine's Day, Fair Issac (the company behind FICO scores) will no longer receive love from Experian. The FICO website has allowed consumers to purchase their three scores from all three credit bureaus, and Experian's decision means you will only be able to buy your TransUnion and Equifax scores. It also means that banks will be making decisions based partially on a score that we can't see.

Tom Quinn, vice president for scoring at Fair Isaac, commented, "We are surprised that Experian made such a decision, particularly given what’s going on in the national economy and with consumers being concerned about their credit standing." While your Experian score won't be visible to you after Feb. 14, you can periodically check your credit report issued by the credit bureau to make sure there are no errors.

Would You Celebrate Thanksgiving Early to Save on Airfare?

Fall has arrived, and with it comes the reminder that the holidays will be here before we know it. Airfare expert Rick Seaney suggests getting the family together for Thanksgiving one month earlier than it's regularly scheduled time to save money on airfare. Prices are at their most expensive over the November holiday and he says you can save a fortune by carving the turkey and watching football in October instead.

It's one thing to celebrate Valentine's Day one day late to save on the cost of dinner, but how do you feel about Rick's idea of organizing the whole family for a faux-Thanksgiving?
