Navigating finances with a partner means constantly adjusting to each other's spending and saving styles and coming up with a system you can both live with. But as relationships grow and change, financial situations do too, and many couples find themselves having to adjust their approach to money after years together. Even if you're not the type to go overboard for Hallmark holidays, Valentine's Day — and all the traditional gifts and activities that go along with it — can add up quickly. Luckily, there are ways around overspending this weekend; celebrating the holiday a day early can save you bucks, as can following a few of my saving tips. If you're still stumped as to how to celebrate with your honey without going into the red, try thinking outside of the heart-shaped box and breaking tradition with these ideas.

There's a little red heart on the calendar for Feb. 14, but wouldn't it be at least as easy to celebrate Valentine's just one day sooner? The holiday is argued by some as just another reason to spend money, though other sweethearts have fun getting into the Cupid spirit in all its red and white glory.

A few years ago I was cruising the purse department at Nordstrom and overheard a sweet-looking lady in her 70s call her husband over to pay for her goodies while she told the salesgal, "he doesn't get any honey unless he shows me the money." I immediately burst into laughter. Still, as silly as it sounds, maintaining a healthy attitude about finances in a long-term relationship requires a balance of humor, clear communication, and shared expectations.

Last year, we spent about $102 on Valentine's Day — not so cheap for a single calendar day. Granted, it's a holiday, and one that goes hand in hand with declarations of love, chocolates, flowers, and romantic dinners out. But finding something special for your loved ones doesn't mean spending a fortune.
