I am a soup fanatic (always asking about the soup of the day and loading my grocery cart with my favorite varieties), but for others, eating soup is more of a cost-saving choice than one of taste. On my recent trips to the grocery store, it has seemed like the soup aisle is more picked through than usual and there are more shoppers scoping out the selection. Have you been purchasing prepared soup more often as a cost saving measure?

Grab 'n' go, quickie stops, and drive-throughs are a given in our fast-paced society, but one auto insurance agency says slowing down can save you money. And they're not talking about lightening your lead foot. In response to a study released by the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, Insurance.com prepared a list of the 10 most dangerous foods to eat while driving because they tend to distract drivers.

Munching a lunch you brought from home is one of the best ways to keep food costs down. Packing a variety of lunch foods will keep you from abandoning your brown-bag system because of boredom, and if this is already getting old, give yourself a break and designate one day a week for buying lunch.
You should only consider adopting this system if you can afford to buy one lunch each week.

A common excuse for hitting up the drive through is that it's cheaper than healthier fare. Rebecca Currie of North Carolina set out to disprove that eating poorly is less expensive than eating healthy and has been living on food that costs just $1 a day. She explained, "It's been a source of frustration for me for a long time that people say eating poorly is cheaper than eating well," and took on this extreme-budget challenge to help her friends learn how to cook nutritiously on less money.

Convenience items like canned soup and frozen meals were the focus of millions of advertising dollars spent trying to portray the products as premium compared to fast food, but new campaigns show that certain brands now want consumers to see their products as value choices. Campbell's has particularly taken a renewed interest in value marketing, and has gone so far as dubbing its line of five condensed soups "the original dollar menu."
Look for other Campbell's soup ads paired with Kraft Singles cheese, calling grilled cheese and tomato soup the "wallet-friendly meal your family will love."

We all have different spending priorities, but there seems to be one thing most of us agree on: Bringing your lunch to work is a great money-saving trick. You need to be proactive to get results with this one (versus your automatic savings account), which means thinking ahead on the weekend.
Sometimes, I like to make a big batch of something that I know will taste even better as leftovers on Sunday, like a hearty soup or vegetarian chili.

Group dining situations can introduce uncomfortable money moments from time to time, but I can't imagine being put on the spot for a $500 dinner bill like Tonya Bowman. She told her story to LifeWire, and it doesn't have a happy ending.
Tonya was invited to help celebrate her new acquaintance's birthday by attending a group sushi dinner.

Even though we know eating at home is cheaper than eating out, the effort it takes to cook after a long work day often does not outweigh the thought of money saved by eating-in. Some people cook a few dishes on Sunday to be eaten throughout the week, but when there's someone who simply despises leftovers you may find some of this food going to waste.
I've always enjoyed leftovers (cold spaghetti, anyone?) but my better half had always been staunchly against them.
