Should the Sex and the City Sequel Ignore the Recession?

The first version of the Sex and the City movie was all about labels and love. That was then. Now, the writers and producers are considering how to make the sequel recession-friendly.

When I asked how you'd go about making the film appropriate for the times, several of you responded saying that they shouldn't attempt to give the movie a more economic makeover. You appreciate the escapism it offers and don't think it's a good idea to take that away. What do you think: should SATC just ignore the recession?

The second Sex and the City movie may be a sequel, but we can expect a lot of changes from the first version. Sarah Jessica Parker recognizes the need to make the new film recession-friendly and said, "How do we address these economic times in a franchise that has a lot to do with luxury and labels?"

Maybe start with discounted ticket prices? I kid, I kid. Michael Patrick King has a lot of thinking to do about how to make the SATC sequel more appropriate for the present, and he's been bouncing some ideas off of SJP for consideration. Do you have any suggestions for them?

Take a Stand: Starving Yourself For Manolos?

Now that many of you have seen the Sex and the City movie, you may have recognized the repetition of this line spoken by Carrie my-middle-name-should-be-Blahnik Bradshaw: "I like my money right where I can see it... hanging in my closet." This wasn't the first time Carrie used those very words, and they were brought back in the movie to perhaps drive home the "labels" half of the "two Ls" that were said to lure women to New York. There have been conflicting ideas about whether or not the movie will affect women consumers, one arguing that advertisers will get what they're wishing for and the other that they will be out of luck. Find out the details behind these arguments when you read more.

Like movie trailers that give away the premise of the plot, headlines and bylines of news stories can give away a story's conclusion. This can be said of the ABC News article called "The Sex (And The City) Economy" with the byline, "Millions Are to Be Made Off the Movie and Not Just by Those in Hollywood" and the Slate article titled, "Sex and the Cash Register" with the supporting byline, "Retailers hope to piggyback on the Sex and the City movie, but it won't work."

ABC supports its article with a quote from a retail consultant saying, "Manolo Blahnik's success skyrocketed as a result of Sex and the City. The prices keep escalating, but women will starve themselves to score a pair of his shoes." On the other hand, Slate calls upon a consumer-insights expert who says, "A few years ago, you could buy a pair of Manolos for $400, and today they're $800 or even $1,000. That price inflation hits hard at this time."

The opposing arguments continue: one suggests the lucrative presence of brands that appear in the movie like Glacéau VitaminWater, Mercedes Benz, Skyy vodka, and the service Bag, Borrow, and Steal; the other confidently insists that "the prognosis for SATC-inspired spending on the luxury goodies showcased in the movie is grim."

Have your shopping habits been influenced by Sex and the City and the brands advertised in the movie? Would you really do anything for a pair of expensive (but gorgeous) heels? Where do you draw the line?

Yesterday I shared a video of fans waiting in line for the Sex and the City May 27 NYC premiere, and some admitted how much they had paid for tickets to the event. Those who were interviewed paid anywhere from $35 to $600 - how much would you have shelled out to see SATC in the city that Carrie loved so much?

It seems as though some Americans put their rebate checks towards stimulating the Sex and the City economy. MainStreet visited the line that started forming yesterday at 6 a.m. for last night's NYC premiere, and asked some of those waiting how much they spent on tickets. It's quite the sliding scale!

Sex and the Ciy Movie Premiere Tickets For Sale on Craigslist

Between the lucrative advertising deals, SATC memorabilia, and scalpers auctioning off sparse premiere tickets, maybe the Sex and the City movie really is the Super Bowl for women! While us Sugar girls are lucky to see the movie two days before its official release, the big premiere is in NYC on May 27 - can we say countdown! MainStreet didn't have to dig far on their Internet search for tickets, and found listings on Craigslist that rival the prices of coveted Super Bowl tickets. Of course there's always the possibility that the tickets are fakes, but the listings online range anywhere from $225-$2,400. Scalping Sex and the City tickets? What would Charlotte think?!

Kristin Davis Understands SATC Fans' Investment in the Movie

Sarah Jessica Parker told Entertainment Weekly that she wants fans to believe the Sex and the City movie is worth their money, and at a recent press junket Kristin Davis expressed similar sentiments. Here's her response to a question about the secrecy bubble that's been constructed around the movie's release.

This is what I want to say about this. For us, so we were a TV show, we were on HBO where you had to pay to have us in your living rooms. And we obviously value those people who paid that large amount of money, because every year, it obviously went up. So we feel similarly now, because not only do they have to buy their ticket, they have to get into their cars and drive. And at this point with media the way it is, that’s a big commitment. And for our fans who have been so loyal and so committed. And have hung in there until the movie’s been made, we don’t want to give everything away, that’s not right, you want to go and actually experience the movie and not know everything.

I'll be getting an early first peek at the movie on May 28 with the other Sugar girls - have you entered our exclusive movie screening in San Francisco giveaway yet? Though I have to admit that I'll be seeing the movie a second time with some of my other girlfriends. Maybe it's not the best investment to see the same movie twice in the theater, but this is one of those times when the fun experience is worth the money.

Is Sex and the City Really a Bad Influence?

All of the buzz around the Sex and the City movie has put Carrie and the girls back in the spotlight. For some of us, they never really left - hello, daily re-runs! The show had such a dedicated following, but it seems that some of the old fans have since turned against the ideals that SATC portrayed.

A young writer for BusinessWeek who claims she was a "die-hard devotee" wrote that the new movie is "bad for career women," and that SATC, Lipstick Jungle, and Cashmere Mafia have this in common: "These women's career success seems largely predicated on the ability to navigate an exciting web of power struggles and sexually charged innuendoes. All in stilettos!" The New York Times also ran a piece on a real sex columnist, and the article criticizes the show for portraying a lifestyle that is difficult for most young women to afford.

Sex and the City Movie Is the Super Bowl For Women

The brains and wallets behind Sex and the City: The Movie are touting the May 30 release as the "Super Bowl for women." And while viewers will likely be consuming Diet Coke and popcorn rather than licking their sticky buffalo-wing-sauced fingers and sipping on brews, one thing will remain constant between the Winter and Spring events: the heavy advertising.

So what kind of products can you expect to be placed alongside our favorite Manhattan women? There are eight marketers whose products will appear in the movie including Skyy vodka, Bag Borrow or Steal, Coty fragrances, Glacéau Vitaminwater, Mercedes-Benz (picture above is evidence), and the jeweler H. Stern. While it's unclear which other two companies are connected with the movie, most of these seem like an appropriate fit for the May audience.

Do you think connecting these products with the movie will make you identify one with the other? Perhaps you'll start sneaking a Vitaminwater into the theater instead of that Diet Coke.
