Government Jobs Among Most Recession-Proof

Even with the unemployment rate pushing nine percent (yikes), we hear reports all the time that at least some industries are hiring. But with everyone from banks to car companies to retailers tightening their belts, you have to wonder: what exactly are these elusive industries?

Market research firm Market Research Media asked this exact question, and came up with the industries that are continuing to grow during our economy’s rough patch - and the ones that aren’t faring so well. To see what they found, read more.

Areas hit hardest by the recession include:

Start-ups
Advertising
Semiconductors (think microchips)

The most recession-resistant jobs, all in the government sector, are:

Research and development
Homeland security
Aerospace and defense

I guess it’s no surprise that government jobs would be the safest bet right now, but I still found this breakdown interesting. Aerospace and research jobs obviously require pretty specific training, but homeland security jobs run the gamut from human resources specialists to engineers, and actually seem like a feasible option for someone looking to recession-proof her career. Things are different for college students today. When I was in college, nobody talked about recession-proof majors because there weren't so-called recession-proof jobs to prepare for. Now, students are being encouraged to choose majors like education, accounting, nursing, and biology, so they'll have an easier time getting a job after graduation.

The job market is the pits, and many of us who graduated into a welcoming real world are dealing with the current realities of unemployment and job uncertainty. Do you regret not choosing what's now considered a recession-proof major, or would you select the same major you did despite its vulnerability in the current market?

Look Who's Hiring: The CIA

Government jobs are proven to be the most recession-proof, and while there are stimulus jobs to be filled, the CIA is doing some recruiting of its own. The ramped-up outreach has involved direct emails and campaigns targeting college students, former Wall Street workers, and anyone with foreign language skills, especially Middle Eastern languages. While you might align the CIA with clandestine activities, as an employee you're not destined to be dressing in disguise.

There are currently positions in 90 different occupations open, like psychologist and software engineer. CIA spokeswoman Marie Harf explains, "We’re looking for everything from analysts and operations officers to linguists, engineers, and accountants." If you enter the agency in a role that doesn't require the highest-level of secrecy, that being undercover, you'll have an easier time balancing work and family than your more covert co-workers.

The US Is Officially in a Recession - Are You Surprised?

We've been throwing around the word recession in connection with the US economy for some time now - everything from recession-proof jobs to recession-proof beauty is common vocabulary. However, in a statement released just today, the National Bureau of Economic Research confirmed that the economy has been in a recession since December 2007.

The last time the economy was in a recession was 2001, after the tech bubble burst. Members of the Business Cycle Dating Committee explained the requirements for a recession in a statement.

A recession is a significant decline in economic activity spread across the economy, lasting more than a few months, normally visible in production, employment, real income, and other indicators. A recession begins when the economy reaches a peak of activity and ends when the economy reaches its trough.

Women Poised to Dominate Work Force For First Time

The traditional American family has featured a man as the breadwinner, but as with everything these days, this traditional frame of mind is being challenged by the greater economic picture. For the first time in American history, women are in a position to outnumber men in the work force. Let that sink in for a moment, and read more.

Men have endured the overwhelming majority of layoffs during this recession, representing 82 percent of the total job losses. As it turns out, the traditional roles that women have assumed in nurturing jobs like health care and education are also relatively recession-proof, while male-dominated fields like manufacturing and construction have been pummeled by the economy.

It's a double-edged sword, in a sense. As Heather Boushey, a senior economist at the Center for American Progress explained, "Given how stark and concentrated the job losses are among men, and that women represented a high proportion of the labor force in the beginning of this recession, women are now bearing the burden - or the opportunity, one could say - of being breadwinners."

It is apparent the American work force is going through dynamic changes, gender-based and otherwise. What do you make of this news?

News Flash: Hollywood Vulnerable to Weak Economy

Traditional thinking has been that Hollywood is recession-proof because consumers will continue to go to the movies in lieu of more expensive entertainment. A recent study has caused some doubt about whether this remains true for today's economy - it found that going to the movies may actually be one of the first activities cut by cash-strapped consumers. - The Wall Street Journal
Bummer for bank employees: Compensation consultancy firm Johnson Associates has projected some bankers' bonuses will be about half of last year's payouts, and most can expect a 15 percent to 25 percent reduction. Other employees could see their bonuses go down as much as 30 percent. - CNN Money
