Oprah Gets Snugly in a Hot Pink Snuggie

Meet the marketing genius behind the Snuggie, Scott Boilen. He appeared on Oprah via satellite to talk to a Snuggie wearing group including Ms. Winfrey (in a hot pink blanket with sleeves) and Tyler Perry (his was zebra print). Scott attributes part of his product's impressive sales numbers to the fact that people are spending more time at home and want to feel warm and comfortable. Oprah and Lisa Ling Go Freegan

If freegan were a Balderdash word, I probably would have scribbled down a definition like 'a dietary group that restricts the consumption of anything that lives freely,' or something else equally insensible because I'd have no idea what it actually meant. But thanks to our mogul friend Oprah, I'll always know the definition of freegan if needed (I can already picture being carried on the shoulders of my teammates at trivia night!) Freegans are a subculture of people who purposely live outside wasteful consumer society and act on their beliefs by using only what they need. Lisa Ling ventures with a freegan group on one of the standard practices of freegan culture - she goes on a trash tour where undamaged produce, packaged goods, and discarded dairy and meat items with sell-by dates that haven't yet come are salvaged by the group.

Madeline is one of the people who sits down with Oprah to discuss her freeganism, and the former six-figure earning exec says that she only spends about $10-$20 on food every week for she and her husband by living a freegan lifestyle. A young couple, Daniel and Amanda (a doctor and an engineer), are freegans because they believe in living simply - not because they can't afford to not live that way, but because they think an emphasis on purchasing the newest products is wasting our world's resources.

Oprah's Requirements For a Truly Successful Life

'Tis the season of caps and gowns. Last year, Oprah spoke to Stanford's class of 2008 about her lessons on feelings, failure, and finding happiness, and this year the mogul lent her presence and words to Duke University's class of 2009. Her theme was success and her message was simple: money is great, but it's not everything.

She proclaimed her love for her private jet and then added some helpful substance saying, "That is my best advice to you - Trust your gut. You know what is right and what is wrong. In Oprah's opinion, you can bank on success with these following requirements. Here's the list she rattled off to Duke's class of '09.

If you can find a way to give back, you will be a huge success.

When you're a true mogul, birthday celebrations have to wait. But then, it's on. Oprah Winfrey blew out candles for her 55th birthday on January 29 but postponed the real party until her show was finished taping for the Summer.

In honor of her birthday, Oprah is taking 1,700 of her employees and their families on a 10-day Mediterranean cruise that kicked off Sunday in Barcelona. Reputably, the boss is picking up the tab for everyone attending. Can you guess how much she's paying for each person?

Oprah's Favorite Things Cost Next to Nothing

If there's one Oprah show that gets the audience more riled up than any other, it's the one where she reveals her favorite gifts for the holidays. The audience goes nuts when they discover which of her favorite things they'll be receiving and everyone is on a big holiday/Oprah high. In the spirit of this economically grim season, she's doing things differently this year.

Oprah Asks: What Would You Dare to Live Without?

Yesterday's episode of Oprah featured two wasteful families that the mogul herself challenged to cut out their defining habits in seven days. It sort of reminded me of Honey We're Killing the Kids in the sense that some of their household regularities were so obviously problematic, and the families even admitted this much, yet they never made any changes on their own. Certainly, overcoming these issues is better late than never.

We meet the Dominguez family of five and the mom, Tina, makes four separate meals for the family without saving any leftovers and they often eat fast food. Not only does the mom have a water bottle habit, but she doesn't recycle the empty ones - that's a two-handed environmental slap! Their gas and electric bills are so high from leaving lights and appliances on and cranking up the thermostat that the dad, Joe, says he sometimes has to borrow money from friends or family. Oprah says: No more individually prepared meals, eat leftovers, no more fast food, replace water bottle habit with Brita, limit TV time to one hour per day, ban iPods and video games, computers used for homework only, turn down the thermostat, and shop in your closets instead of the mall. Tina has the hardest time giving up television, the three kids say it was a struggle without their computers. At the end of the challenge week, Tina says, "We never realized how much we wasted. We just spoiled the kids and let them buy what they wanted on the computer with no time limits. We're a changed family."

Oprah's Three Lessons That Impacted Her Life

How memorable would it be to have Oprah as a commencement speaker at your graduation ceremony? She spoke for about 30 minutes to Stanford's class of 2008 and shared these three lessons that have greatly impacted her life, having to do "with feelings, with failure and with finding happiness."

She may have given each graduate two books, but we can all take something away from the three lessons. You can view the entire video on YouTube.

On feelings: "When you're doing the work you're meant to do, it feels right and every day is a bonus, regardless of what you're getting paid. The trick is to learn to check your ego at the door and start checking your gut instead."

On failure: "So, ask every failure-this is what I do with every failure, every crisis, every difficult time-I say, what is this here to teach me? And as soon as you get the lesson, you get to move on. If you really get the lesson, you pass and you don't have to repeat the class. If you don't get the lesson, it shows up wearing another pair of pants-or skirt-to give you some remedial work."
On happiness: "Don't live for yourself alone. This is what I know for sure: In order to be truly happy, you must live along with and you have to stand for something larger than yourself. Because life is a reciprocal exchange. To move forward you have to give back. And to me, that is the greatest lesson of life. To be happy, you have to give something back."
