Picking a major in college can feel like the biggest decision ever, but it's hardly a lifetime commitment to a certain field or profession. Of course, it's not easy to see that when you're weighing career options and envisioning what the future might hold for you professionally. Did you have guidance and encouragement from teachers, family or counselors when it came time to pick a career path, or did you access your skills yourself and make a plan from there?

Dear Savvy,
I recently got a letter in the mail from a local car dealership requesting that I trade in my 2001 VW Passat, saying that they are getting lots of requests and stating the blue book value for my car. I wouldn't mind buying a new car, but promised myself I would drive my car until it is unrepairable or I graduate from college, whichever comes first. I still have two more years to go, but if this offer is legitimate, I don't want to let the opportunity go.

Statistics show that it's typical for someone to have changed jobs seven to nine times by the times she's in her mid-30s, and on average she'll change careers entirely three times during her lifetime. I always thought these figures seemed high as my parents and most of their middle-aged friends have been working in the same careers for most of their lives, but I met a 70-something woman this past weekend who left a remarkable impression. It feels like the cost of stamps changes as frequently as the weather, and this week the postal service announced another increase.

I really wish that I had some good news to report regarding employment, but it's tough to dig up a silver lining when unemployment claims in the US have hit a 26-year high. Many of us have never seen numbers like these in our lifetimes, so let's see how much you know about employment right now. Think of it as an opportunity to brush up on current events.

It may seem counterintuitive that you're presented with retirement savings options the moment you get your first job. You just started working and you're asked to consider your life when you've stopped working for good. That's reality folks, because unless you have a family fortune to count on or make serious dinero that lets you worry less, it can take your working lifetime to save enough to live during retirement.

What does it say about the state of our economy when during his stint as a graduation speaker, the Chairman of the Federal Reserve realizes he has successfully delivered a downer speech to an eager graduating class? Ben Bernanke turned what is usually a more lighthearted and motivational speech into a "dry economics speech," but he couldn't help himself given the current economy and what most of the crowd (or at least the parents) had on their minds when he approached the podium. Find out what Harvard's new alumni learned on their graduation day when you read more
