Many of us are trying to be better with money in 2009, and in order to do so we need to pay attention to where our money goes. A fun exercise I like to play when I need to check in with my spending is thinking of the last five things I spent money on. No expense is too small to be accounted for, so let's play, shall we?

Your immediate goal in this economic climate might simply be to keep your job, but a stagnant economy doesn't mean we have to stop thinking of where we're going with our careers. It's important for your professional growth and your personal satisfaction to constantly be thinking about your goals and how you're going to achieve them. So tell me, what are your career goals for the new year and beyond?

As much as we try to avoid it, sometimes we can't escape bringing our work with us when we're away from home. Most recently, my work came with me on a trip to Los Angeles, but the most inappropriate place my work has been was a camping ground in Northern California (believe me, my friends gave me plenty of flack about this one). Many of us have traveled during the last month or so, and I'm curious if your job managed to make it along on your holiday.

Whether you got a shiny new iPhone for Christmas and need to break your contract, or you think you want to upgrade your cell phone service in 2009 you should check in with your carrier about their early-termination fees, the status of your contact, and any deals they might be running for the new year. (Honestly, I hope you checked the tiny print before you signed that dotted line!)
Consumer Reports notes one in seven survey respondents said "they were seriously considering a switch to a better carrier but were discouraged from doing so by penalties that can run as high as $200 per phone line." As we all know, termination fees can be a real bugaboo.

I've been throwing questions out there all year, and whether they're fun or serious questions your answers are always interesting. Here are some of the questions that received the most enthusiastic responses in 2008.
When Cash Is No Object?
When You Grew Up .

As we get older, it's harder for parents and extended family members to select gifts for us, and many of my friends have said they've come to expect to receive cash for the holidays. Usually, cash is given with the intent that you'll spend it on something that you've chosen for yourself and that you love. It takes the pressure off of family members and they're able to essentially give you what you wanted.

As much as we try and stay focused on gifts for others when we're holiday shopping, it's challenging not to let our eyes wander, especially with
so many sales going on. And when there's a buy one get the second for half price promotion happening, it's just asking for you to splurge on something for yourself.
Nearly half of you shared that
you buy yourselves birthday gifts (as do I), and I'm wondering if the spirit of the holiday season tends to lead you to be generous with yourself, too.

Generosity often takes a toll when times are tough, and right now definitely qualifies as one of those times. General etiquette says that during the holidays, it's a nice touch to give an extra tip or gift to the people who make our lives easier, like hairstylists, postal people, and doormen. Do you tend to tip more during the holidays, and if so, are you reconsidering your usual amounts this season because money is tight?
Last night's episode of
The Office was titled "The Surplus," and the episode appropriately opened with Oscar explaining to Michael why they had to spend the $4,300 budget surplus by the day's end. When Michael doesn't understand what Oscar is talking about, he asks Oscar to explain it to him like he's an 8-year-old. Then, when the light-bulb still doesn't go on, he asks Oscar to explain it to him like he's a 5-year-old.

Black Friday has come and gone faster than your turkey hangover went away. I wasn't able to make it out to any of the sales myself (good thing there's still Cyber Monday), but being a bargain hunter at heart, I'm dying to hear about the on-sale loot you scored.
What deals did you get your hands on this Black Friday?
