Going Green: Green-Collar Jobs

Many professionals are beginning to apply their skills to improving the environment, and as a result a whole new collared class has emerged. According to a report commissioned by the American Solar Energy Society, there are currently 8.5 million U.S. jobs in renewable-energy and energy-efficiency industries and that number could grow to 40 million in the next twenty years.

Some politicians are certainly doing their part to hit that 40 million mark. On Monday, Hillary Clinton and John Edwards both mentioned creating more green-collar jobs to stimulate the economy, as these jobs aren't easily outsourced.

The Most Admired Men and Women of 2008

We're starting to switch gears to 2009, but last year was a big one and 2008 is hardly a distant memory at this point. A Gallup poll asked Americans who they admired most in 2008 and the results are varied and interesting.

For the seventh year in a row, Hillary Clinton was ranked as the most admired woman, and Sarah Palin ousted second place incumbent Oprah Winfrey in the 2008 list. Barack Obama was voted the most admired man for the first time: In fact, Gallup notes that Obama is the first president-elect since Dwight Eisenhower in 1952 to top the list.

Renewed Sexism in the Workplace

While the number of female officers among Fortune 500 firms steadily increased during the early and mid-1990s, that number has decreased each year since 2005 and stalled in 2007. Last year, the boards of Fortune 500 companies were represented with only 14.8 percent women. This month's issue of Portfolio explores why there aren't more women in charge of corporate America but doesn't exactly come up with an answer to the question.

The author of the article, "Sexism," observes that nobody wants to talk about sexism because most people think there's nothing to discuss. She boldly points out that a number of the women acknowledged in the Wall Street Journal's "50 Women to Watch in 2007" list "appear deliberately, studiously unfeminine." So what? The author muses that women with power avoid criticism based on appearance by flying "below the radar," and notes Vogue editor Anna Wintour's comments when Hillary Clinton declined to do a photo shoot with the magazine.

Imagine my amazement, then, when I learned that Hillary Clinton, our only female presidential hopeful, had decided to steer clear of [being photographed for] our pages at this point in her campaign for fear of looking too feminine. The notion that a contemporary woman must look mannish in order to be taken seriously as a seeker of power is frankly dismaying." She went on to ask, "How has our culture come to this?" and state, "This is America, not Saudi Arabia."

Glamour Picks Its Women of the Year: Who Is Your Pick?

Hillary Clinton, Nicole Kidman, Condoleezza Rice, and Jane Goodall were just some of the remarkable women honored at Glamour's 2008 Women of the Year awards Monday night. The rewarded ladies were recognized for their various accomplishments and contributions, from trailblazing opportunities to spreading environmental awareness.

Glamour asked its readers to nominate their own personal heroes for a Woman of Your Year contest, and the winner was 25-year old cancer survivor Rachel Lozano who battled the disease throughout her teenage years. Now she's studying art therapy so she can help sick children. Check out the video for highlights of the big event and then tell me, who is the woman of your year?

I've done it (once). Hillary Clinton has done it (more than once). And now I want to know if you've ever shed tears in your professional setting. Tears can be brought on for a variety of reasons - people cry when they're frustrated, angry, overwhelmed, or in reaction to something said to them.
