They're the ones wandering around with pillowcases in the dark, but most adults love a good celebration and Halloween is the perfect excuse to do something different. If you can't afford to attend a big bash that started selling tickets back in August or pay cover charges to enter one of your city's hot events, it doesn't have to mean Halloween is a bust this year. It seems there are a couple of key trends for Halloween this year - thanks to Twilight, True Blood, and TV's other vampy dramas, vampires are hot this season. But, another major trend just may be savvy Halloween spending. While Halloween last year seemed an ideal opportunity to escape economic woes, a year later - and a year wiser - more people are practicing smarter spending when it comes to celebrating Halloween traditions.

According to a recent survey, Halloween shoppers are planning to spend an average of $56.31, down $10 from last year. Even among 18-24 year-olds, who are typically Halloween's big partiers - and spenders - projected spending is down nearly $20.

Though Bloomberg reports that people are less likely to celebrate Halloween at all this year, remember that being budget-conscious doesn't mean that you have to quit the festivities all together. So, tell me, do you have any saving tricks for making this Halloween a more wallet-friendly treat?

Dunder Mifflin's Scranton branch got all decked out for Halloween on last night's episode of The Office. Stanley wore a mask so he could discreetly sleep, Kelly dressed as Carrie Bradshaw, Phyllis was Raggedy Ann, Ryan was Gordon Gekko, Andy wore a kitten costume, and Dwight and Kevin both showed up as the Joker. Pam didn't know the tradition was limited to the Scranton branch and went to work in the New York office dressed as Charlie Chaplin, where nobody else wore a costume.

Halloween doesn't have to be expensive, but as we get older it's harder to come up with a fabulous costume that doesn't involve spending money. There's always the option of recycling last year's attire to save, though dressing up isn't as fun when your outfit is expected. And, no, this Starbucks "looking for work" costume is not what I'm wearing. Did you shell out cash this year for your Halloween costume?

In-the-Black Tip: Spend Smarter

We're celebrating Halloween with In-the-Black Week, but this tip is something to also keep in mind when you are preparing to shop for the upcoming holidays.

In-the-Black tip: Shop with a purpose. Make a list of the things you're hoping to find, whether it's a new holiday party dress for you or gifts for the people you love. Next to each item or person's name, write how much you can afford to spend. You may be able to spend $200 on yourself normally, but when you have a long list of gifts to buy, you might have to spend less. Use a spreadsheet to track the purchases as you go including what you paid for each item, so you can clearly see how well you are sticking to your overall spending plan.

Wednesday Check-In: You May Need a Midweek Makeover

We've hit the midweek mark - and while that may not be cause for celebration for everyone, it's certainly reason enough to stop and evaluate your weekly progress. Are you on task to complete assignments in time for the weekend or have you spent all of your time prepping your Halloween costume and readying your apartment for a slew of trick-or-treaters? If this is the case, you may be in need of a midweek makeover?

Today, take a few minutes to check in with yourself - finances, office assignments, personal errands, and any obligations. Since we're headed into a busy Halloween weekend and then, the beginning of a new month, it's unlikely that you'll find the time to tie up any loose ends over the weekend. So, get going now.

Take a moment to look over expenses, and put any saving reminders and good-spending practices into place. As far as errands go, make sure you're making time for your personal tasks as well as office work, and remember to work smart - focusing your energy and time on the tasks you find most challenging first to avoid being burned out later.

Since November is often a busy time with the holiday and family, try to get ahead now - get your November calendar out and mark important dates and deadlines. This way, while you're out enjoying the Halloween festivities, you can rest easy, knowing you've already planned ahead at home.

If you're finding that you're stressed out by the impending holiday and your workload at the office, do just one thing for yourself - actively tune into what's going on, and disregard the tendency to tune it all out. Prioritize what must be done, and set an ultimate goal to remain positive throughout the week.
