50 Most Powerful Women List Honors Youngest Woman Ever

Fortune released its annual list of the 50 most powerful women in business, and while most of the honorees are in their 40s or 50s, the youngest woman to ever claim a spot on the list is only 33 years old. Marissa Mayer, VP of Search and User Experience at Google debuted the list at number 50, and it seems likely that she'll move her way up the list in years to come.

A self-proclaimed geek, Marissa was Google's first female engineer and her job is to oversee thousands of engineers while shaping the design of services like Google.com, Google Maps, Earth, Health, iGoogle. As one of the most powerful women in business, she is in the company of inspiring and accomplished women like Oprah Winfrey, Indra Nooyi (CEO of PepsiCo), Andrea Jung (CEO of Avon), and many more.

I'm Asking: What Turns Up When You Google Yourself?

It's common knowledge that a potential employer will do a Google search for your name when they're considering you for a position, so it's a good idea to know what's out there for them to find.

My search doesn't come up with anything too mind blowing, but here are some highlights: there's a press release from when I was promoted at my previous job, my name appears on a list of my graduating college class, and if you dig really deep into the Google results I'm quoted at age 19 in a very random article in my campus's paper.

What comes up when you plug in your name? Anything that makes you giggle or blush?

Google Is Hiring a Concierge For Employees

Fortune named Google the best company to work for two years in a row, and the Google guys keep coming up with more reasons why they deserve the title. They are currently seeking someone to fill the newly developed position of corporate concierge, and the job is much like that of a hotel concierge. The person's services would be available to all employees needing assistance with things like making reservations and ordering flowers.

It seems that Google employees' lives are just getting sweeter, and whoever becomes the company's first corporate concierge won't have it too bad, either. While they may be recommending places to eat outside of the campus's 17 cafes, the campus alone offers plenty of culinary enjoyment and other incredible perks. Who's ready to send in her resume?

Your Two Cents: Do You Google the People Who Interview You?

It's fair to assume that a potential employer will Google search your name before offering you a job. They've heard about your great accomplishments and how qualified you think you are for the job, and they want to see if there's any dirt you're hiding that says something else about your character.

With the knowledge that an employer will be poking around the Internet for you-news, have you done a reverse Google? And I don't mean just looking up the person's profile on the company's website.

Savvy Tip: Two Ways to Score Free WiFi at the Airport

Searching for (or stealing) someone else's spotty Internet signal is never fun. Trust me, I've tried it - and let's just say Savvy wasn't smiling when it cut out . . . midblog post. Still airport (and in-flight rates) won't always add up to a deal for an hour layover, or an hour flight.

Luckily, Google announced a free holiday WiFi program in 47 participating airports and on all Virgin America flights until Jan. 15! If you're not flying that airline, through those locations or another airport with already free WiFi, Bing will offer free Internet access at a range of airport and hotel hotspots if you simply perform just one search with their engine. Hey, you can use it to search for your next great deal!

I'm Asking: Would You Make a Donation for "Free" Services?

Not that I'm one to turn down a little something for nothing to save money, and take advantage of museum free days or other no-fee exhibits while traveling, even gratis concerts in the park can have people asking for donations to keep these things a reality.Still the reality is, seeing the donation bin doesn't always make people toss in money or it'd be overflowing daily! Even Google's free holiday Wifi program has a giveback option. If you're looking for a way to spread holiday cheer and generosity, you can make a charitable donation to one of three organizations, and the company will match it up to $250,000 - whoa, now that's some pricey WiFi!

If faced an optional donation, especially for a service you'd ordinarily have to pay for, do you offer up a little something in exchange?

Free Credit Report Scams Aren't Going Away

By now we all know about the not-so-free nature of those FreeCreditReport.com services; a few of you even say you've fallen for its misleading practices. But even after the government publicly condemned the site, "free" credit monitoring services - which require you to sign up for a paid service, but promise you can cancel at any time - are popping up everywhere.

One friend recently had a particularly nasty experience with one of these companies while apartment hunting. To hear what happened, read more.

An apartment listing on Craigslist requested that she get her own credit report through a specific company. She filled out all the info and put in a credit card when prompted (ouch), but wasn’t able to access the free report she was promised. A week later, charges showed up on her card, but each time she called the company to cancel, she was sent to voicemail. After some Google research revealed that several fraud alerts had already been filed against the company, she reported the charges as fraudulent to her credit card company.

Savvy as we all may be, it’s easier than you think to get sucked into one of these situations. To prevent this from happening to you, keep the following tips in mind:

Only request free credit reports using AnnualCreditReport.com. You can request a free report up to three times a year, once from each of the major reporting agencies. This site will not ask you to enter your credit card number.

Type the Annual Credit Report URL directly into your address bar, rather than clicking on a link from a third party to reach the site. If you’re redirected to a site that isn’t one of the major reporting agencies (Equifax, TransUnion, or Experian), don’t continue with the process.

If at any point you’re asked for a credit or debit card number, walk away. Companies only request a credit card for one reason: they plan to charge you. Period.
