Maybe they shouldn't be gigantic houses for ppl who are too stupid to manage money?

Wow, Savvy, you have ESP. I have heard that this "do good" TV program actually leaves behind lots of financial messes for the people they intended to help. I was searching on Google just yesterday to dig up some news on this. And here you are posting a bit today! Thanks! There have got to be more stories out there...

Uh hello - Show up for your meetings and you won't have a fine - This is just like the story about the 85 year old woman who took out a 30 year mortgage when she was 80! Take some responsibility. (and while I'm at it, if the mortgage companies took some responsibility for their horrendous actions, maybe Americans wouldn't feel like they were exempt from the law as well)

This sounds like a case of just plain carelessness that doesn't have much to do with the show. I'm sure she had to sign something for the license that outlined those stipulations. If you break rules, there are consequences. On top of that, why in the world would you skip that when you know it would only lead to more problems?

This reminded me of the HGTV house giveaway. All of the winners end up selling the home because of the amount of taxes attached to the property and the maintenance fees it would cost to keep it up.

But anyway, why would she have porta-potties around?

i've had a bit of a battle internally with this show lately. first off - a lot of the time they can't build the homes where the original one was...so that means that they are moving families from where they are to some place else, and who knows what the resulting property taxes are there, along with the fact that bigger houses have bigger expenses. i think that it's a nice thought that the show has but there are longer term things to think about aside from getting a new place to live that's worlds better for the family than what they had before.

i hope that sadie is able to figure something out since it would be a shame for her to lose something that she was honored with by the program.

Cases like these really make me angry!

First, the show has rebuilt hundreds, if not thousands, of homes over the years, to many respectable people who aren't necessarily bad with money. Many face medical bills, or have special needs, or lost a loved one, etc. In all those hundreds of wonderful homes they have built the only stories you hear are of the few people who truly waste, or do not know how to handle, these wonderful gifts given to them!

A home was built in my hometown in the fall of 2005--since then the family seems to have no trouble accepting the responsibilities that come with such a large gift. More importantly, besides the new home the community, because of the show, provided all three children with college scholarships and more--so I cannot see how this show can be seen in a negative light overall.

It is sad that a few people can shed such a negative light on such a heartfelt and wonderful thing that this show provides people with--again I saw it with my own eyes and it was truly amazing what they did and accomplished in such a short time--I am still in awe thinking of it!

As to other comments, only once or twice have a seen them build homes on different properties--the one in my home town built the new house right where the old one was. On another note, I agree with beram--this woman was careless and that had nothing to do with the show! But I cannot agree with the comment about not giving people what they don't earn--so many of these people are extremely deserving!

I agree with everyone else. These problems she's in seem to stem from her own irresponsibility rather than the show's. And like everyone else said, it's a shame a few bad apples give a bad name to the project as a whole...

why on earth did she have broken down cars on her property, and not show up for her meeting? sorry, not much sympathy for her here. i agree that extreme makeover does probably go overboard, but it sounds like this was her own fault.

I don't know what this ladies problem is with the cars and stuff, but as for the show it does go overboard. They could help with giving nice comfortable homes that people could actually afford. you don't need 3 thousand or more sguare foot homes to be comfortable just nice looking, energy efficient, workable homes.

Maybe a financial planner for a two-year period would be a good fit for these folks.
