I just read about a study that revealed eight out of 10 first-time property buyers in England are receiving cash from their parents to foot the down payment. It's apparently the highest percentage that they've ever measured, more than two times the number in 2005. This is attributed to the global financial crisis, and English banks now require a deposit too high for people to pay without assistance from mom and dad.

We keep reading about the latest financial reforms that were created as solutions to the economic crisis, but do some of the terms leave you more confused than ever? I often refer friends to the video The Crisis of Credit Visualized, created by media designer Jonathan Jarvis, which gives a simple explanation of what happened in just 11 minutes. It's one of those "If you don't know, now you know!"

The question, "Is the recession good for society?" is a tough one. On the one hand, the universal lack of job security, tanking economy and stress of maintaining quality of life (or even keeping a roof over your head) is almost immeasurable.

If so, you may be feeling the effects of our current recession for years, or even decades, to come. NEET is a British term for young people of leisure — those "not in employment, education, or training" — and their numbers are growing.
Since this recession has seen more hiring cutbacks than layoffs, those attempting to enter the workplace for the first time (like recent graduates) have been hit the hardest.

Although experts claim the recession is over, a whopping 84 percent of you beg to differ. This morning, a local public radio show in SF tackled the topic, and opinions were pretty divided there, too.
One of the questions raised on the show was whether unemployed Americans should be taking a little extra time to find a job that’s the right fit, or whether they should jump at the first opportunity that comes their way, even if they’re overqualified.

According to an optimistic piece in the New York Times, economic recovery is well within our sights, in fact, we may already be there. Still, there are some who aren't so quick to call the recession over and done with. Even President Obama recently referred to the recession in present tense.

The recession has affected us all in one way or another — if you haven’t experienced salary freezes or cuts, layoffs, or home foreclosures over the past year or so, odds are someone you know has.
But, what about the recession’s less tangible effects? A New York Times/CBS News poll released this week explores the emotional fallout of being unemployed, and the results are sobering.

If I had a quarter for every time I was exposed to the word recession this year, I'd have a pretty little fund built up for holiday gifts. The economy has been the cause of so much stress and heartache, and it's hard to want a reminder of those feelings during a time that's supposed to be joyful.
There's a line of Merry Recession Christmas cards that is banking on the recession having a place in this holiday season.
