Shopaholic Designer Patricia Field Explains Shopping in Moderation

If the movie ticket price prevented you from seeing Confessions of a Shopaholic in the theaters, you may be excited to know the fun film came out on DVD today - an entertaining night doesn't get much cheaper than a $5 movie and homemade popcorn. In light of the movie making its way to more of the masses, the film's costume designer Patricia Field talked to Shape magazine about her tips for shopping with a budget. Anyone with an appreciation or affliction for shopping, take note.

When asked if she thinks certain items are worth a splurge, the accomplished designer replied:

It depends on what makes you happy. If you see something and you love it, but maybe it's a little more than you want to spend, then buy it. Just don't spend as much on the next item. It's all about balancing. You should splurge on what's really special. Really you're the most important thing, not the clothes.

I'm Asking: What's Your Soft Addiction?

In discussing the relatability of Confessions of a Shopaholic, screenplay writer Kayla Alpert explained how the books spoke to her.

I think, you know, everybody has a secret addiction, some people’s are more extreme, some people are addicted to online poker, some people are addicted to shopping. A lot of women I know have, you know, soft addictions, I know I’m on Amazon.com a little more than I should be . . ."

I can completely relate to Kayla's comment (shopbop.com, anyone?) and I think labeling these innocent habits as "soft addictions" is pretty brilliant. What's yours?

Who's Right About Office Love: Isla Fisher or Hugh Dancy?

The much buzzed about Confessions of a Shopaholic comes out tonight and I can't wait to get my cute movie fix. Isla Fisher plays the movie's heroine, Rebecca Bloomwood, while Hugh Dancy plays Rebecca's boss and love interest. There's lots of scripted chemistry, but the costars' off-screen characters seemed divided in their opinions of workplace romance when they were asked about the issue while promoting their film.

Isla's take on office love:

I think it works out very well for Rebecca Bloomwood in the story because Luke Brandon actually uncovers her voice and helps her to fulfill her . . . Personally, I’m not a fan of romance in the workplace because, you know, you start seeing someone everyday.

Hugh's take:

Work-based romance? As long as it’s legal, I think it’s okay. . . We’ve all had our own share of work-based romance I expect. I think as long as there’s actually some romance in it, as long as that’s not just a euphemism for something else entirely, it’s probably a good thing.

Confessions of a Shopaholic Seems Worth the Ticket Price

There's nothing like going to a movie on a cold, rainy, weekend night, but going to the theater is hardly cheap and I don't want to be disappointed with how I spent my money. The previews for Confessions of a Shopaholic made the colorful movie seem right up my ally - a girl with a shopping habit goes into debt, lies to get a job, and has a workplace romance. How much more could it touch on my love for all things career-and-money?

We all know the previews can exaggerate the success of an actual movie, so I turned to my friend BuzzSugar to find out the goods on this film. After learning more about the movie from her, I'm convinced Confessions will be worth my $12. I think we loved the character. Rebecca Bloomwood is such a unique, fresh, and interesting young girl. She embodies a lot of what young girls around the world deal with. You know, they deal with the credit cards, they deal with the workplace, they deal with a job that they don’t really like and how to get out of it. I think it’s a real empowering . . . it’s empowerment for women. This girl comes to the movie, starts out in one place and ends up in another place much more positive then when she started. She finds romance, she finds something that she really loves doing.
