It seems a spoonful of sugar helps the hard economic times go down. While most industries are suffering, candy creators and shops are reporting gains. Companies like Cadbury, Nestle and Hershey reported profits in 2008, with Cadbury leading the group with a 30 percent rise.

I finally dished out $10 (well, $24 if you count my popcorn, candy and soda!) to see This Is It, and while it was fascinating to see Michael Jackson's backstage persona on the job, I was particularly struck by the awe his backup dancers had for him. The documentary opens with an emotional scene of the crew sharing their audition tales — shot before MJ's death — and throughout the film we see the chosen few standing stage left grooving to Michael's sound checks. It's clear from their tears, stories, and smiles that the dancers worship his professional history.

We tune in for the entertainment (and maybe for a little eye candy), and the highest earning American athletes know they're appreciated. These guys might suffer from injuries here and there and endure grueling training schedules, but they certainly aren't hurting for cash. Moms are synonymous with TLC, so showing them appreciation on Mother's Day is the least we can do. ABC News polled moms across the country about what they want for their holiday, and instead of flowers or candy most responded with things like help around the yard or house, homemade meals cooked by someone else, and quality time with the family.
While ABC credits the recession for moms' desire to choose time over material gifts this Mother's Day, I question if the economy really has much to do with their answers.

Shopping at dollar stores can be a useful way to save money on household items, but we still need to pay attention to the unit prices while perusing the repriced selection. MSN Money did some shopping around and discovered that canned vegetables and fruit are often more expensive than at other stores, and the same can be said of trash bags, food-storage bags, and bottled water.
The test also came up with a bunch of stuff that was cheaper at the dollar store, like shampoo, school and office supplies, spices, candy, snack foods, and household cleaners.

People are still spending money during the recession, they're just spending it differently than before things went downhill. Time magazine was curious about recessionary spending and recruited the Nielsen Co. to determine what people have been buying more or less of during the first two months of the year.

Those who celebrate Halloween often spend the day after recovering from two types of hangovers, one of them being from sugary sweets. You might not want to think about candy right now, but there are always big discounts on Halloween treats and decorations starting Nov. 1.

While many retailers started giving their full court press in holiday advertising at least a month ago, most shoppers shift gears to the holidays after Halloween has passed. Well, tomorrow marks the occasion for haunted houses and candy corn, which means November and intense holiday shopping is already upon us. During the holidays, saving often takes a back seat to spending, so here is my solution for ensuring you're left with more than pennies after the season of giving has ceased.
