Dear Savvy,
I paid off several debts nearly six years ago, and they're still showing on my credit report. I've read online that it takes seven years for it to be removed, starting from the date the debt went into collection. Is this correct?

All year you've been asking me smart, challenging questions that I've had the pleasure of answering to the best of my ability. I absolutely love trying to help you savvy ladies, and I always end up learning something, too, when you weigh in with your own comments and advice. Here are some of the most popular Ask Savvy posts of the year.

Dear Savvy,
I moved back in with my parents about a year and a half ago to get my finances under control. I want to move out in the next few months but don't have a clue what my budget should look like. I want to live on my own (or with roommates) and be financially solvent — unlike the last time I was on my own.

Dear Savvy,
I am in a management position at my company but not top management. So I was somewhat surprised last year during the holidays, when several of my employees bought me Christmas presents. It was a really lovely gesture and I got some great gifts, but in general, I’m more of a “no gifts please” type of person (I have in the past made that rule about birthday parties.)
With the economic downturn this year, I’d just rather they not stress about it and not get me anything.

Dear Savvy,
My boyfriend and I are looking to buy our first home together. He makes about $25,000 more than me per year and we both have similar expenses when it comes to our loans (I make about $56k and he makes about $81k). We're very realistic that relationships don't always work out in the end, but right now, we're very happy and believe we will get married and have children in the future.

Dear Savvy,
I'm wondering what you think is the best method for getting into a company. I am looking for a job in my area, and there is a specific company that I want to work for.
My knee-jerk reaction is to apply for any job that I am capable of doing, but the more I think about it the more I think that it may not be a good idea.

Dear Savvy,
With the economy the way it is, what's the average pay cut people are being forced to take after their position is eliminated and they need a job? And what is the best way to handle an employer asking what salary you are looking for in this kind of economy?
See my answer when you .

Dear Savvy,
I have a store credit card with a $1,500 limit that I've had for about six years, which I use occasionally to earn store points. They recently changed their program and switched to an actual MasterCard, and sent me a new card with an $11,000 limit. I did not ask for the new card and I certainly don't need it.

Dear Savvy,
I've been meaning to take a $5,000 personal loan. However, as you may know, my bank WaMu was bought by JP Morgan Chase. I'm not sure what kind of effects this would have on me or my bank.

Q: Dear Savvy,
I have an advanced degree in Science and Engineering and am currently job hunting. I keep seeing and hearing conflicting reports about what to wear to my interviews. Any advice?
