The fine print that's tacked onto travel offers can be confusing to say the least, but when it comes to figuring out whether or not you're getting a real deal, channel something you're very familiar with — grocery shopping. Vacations may be fun, but they don't come cheaply. Thankfully, there are a handful of tricks that enable us to explore the globe economically. Homes are one category where you cannot judge the cost by its cover. Housing prices vary wildly depending on geography — the same chunk of change can buy a 1,000 square-foot condo in one part of the country or a 5,200 spacious home in another area.
The 2009 Coldwell Banker Home Price Comparison Index was released this week, and it's an "apples-to-apples" comparison of the prices around the nation for 2,200-square-foot, four-bedroom, two-and-one-half bath, single-family homes.

I'll miss my beloved Summer tomatoes, but there's a plethora of Fall produce to scoop up at the store. Better yet, celebrate Autumn by taking day trips to pick-your-own orchards where you can spend the day outside selecting your own goodies. Apple orchards and pumpkin patches are easiest to come by, but depending on where you live, there may be corn mazes that allow you to wander among the corn rows.

Mortgage apple cakes are the tastiest thing on the menu for one New Jersey homeowner. Angela Logan must make a $2,559.54 payment on July 26 if she wants to keep her home of 20 years out of foreclosure, and because of a successful bake sale it looks like she'll meet the deadline.
Logan cooked up the idea to sell apple cakes for $40 each in order to pay her mortgage, and as of Tuesday, she had more than 500 orders, including one from Hong Kong.

The Big Apple Greeter Group is spicing up its 18-year-old all-volunteer program with free celebrity-led tours. Typically, tourists are paired up with New York residents who show visitors the city they know — not the guide-book version.
They'll recommend what to order at classic eateries and take you through their favorite neighborhoods, and the celebrity-led tours essentially offer the same arrangement.

We know the Nano as a small Apple iPod, but the name is shared by another tiny product. India's Tata Motors' version of the Nano, with its $2,300 price-tag, is known as the world's cheapest car.
The four-seater vehicle will be sold in India starting in July, and the manufacturer's chairman hopes the cars will make it to US dealers within two years.

Dollar signs are often associated with New York City, and while nobody is arguing it's pricey, Forbes says the Big Apple is not the most overpriced.
Forbes factored together the average salary for residents with at least bachelor degrees, annual unemployment statistics, cost of living, and housing affordability based on local median income to determine the most overpriced cities in the US. Surprisingly, New York is not number one on this list.
