Your Two Cents: Are You Leaving Work Early to Vote Today?

Casting your vote for the next US president should be a priority today, and we can expect Election Day voting lines to be on the longer side this year. Here in California the polls open at 7 a.m. and close at 8 p.m., so hopefully the long hours encourage everyone to get out and vote. Go Lite When Talking Politics in the Office

I'll be hitting the polls after work today, and I usually respond openly when asked which candidate I'm voting for. My political position is of course, personal, but the question doesn't bother me, though I know some people find the question slightly invasive so I'm usually not the one asking about others' politics. The office is one place where you may want to be on guard about your politics, and the NYT has a helpful Q & A to get you through the next nine months. Are displays of affiliation appropriate? It depends on your employer, but generally it's a good idea to avoid visible demonstrations (like pins, bobble heads, pinned up bumper stickers) if your business deals with the public.
What’s the best way for employees to share political perspectives? Use common sense on this one - just be respectful. No need to create enemies by pursuing an aggressive political conversation.
To what extent can companies limit political expression in the workplace? Private companies have the right to prohibit political expression at the office, but government employees could be an exception.
Can you be fired for expressing political opinions at work? Yes, and it's happened before. If you want to express yourself ask about company policy first, or better yet save it for your personal life.

While their wallets are much heftier than most of ours, I'm wondering if you put any of your check towards the candidate of your choice or if you leave donating to the celebs.

What's on Your Millenial Mind?

There's been a lot of discussion these days trying to pin down Gen Yers (also known as Millennials) as one thing or another. We 18 to 29 year olds make up 20 percent of registered voters, so the presidential hopefuls are trying to find out what makes us tick. MSNBC published a really interesting article called "Youthquake shakes up electoral politics" that investigated Millennials' perception of our past, present and future. I think it was successful in identifying much of our reality with this statement:

Talk of recession, a weak dollar, and rising unemployment all animate Millennials' economic angst. But there's a lot more to it than that. Young people may not know that the inflation-adjusted earnings of new college grads have fallen 8.5 percent since 2000. But they can feel it in the deflated salaries and shriveled benefits they command, even in white-collar jobs. They don't need an economics degree to understand that the middle class is squeezed. This generation has grown up watching parents struggle to stretch a buck. They lived through the mass layoffs during the corporate scandals earlier this century.

What would you add to this description to make it more in tune with your own experiences as a Millenial?

When I first came across this CNN article "Millionaires-in-Chief" I felt like I was reading something I shouldn't - like when someone instant messages you about yourself. It outlines each presidential candidates' net worth, how they got rich, and how their money is invested. I'll admit, I found myself caring more and more as I scrolled through the candidates' net-worth profiles.

They're all loaded. The figures shouldn't be too surprising considering most of their old-money families, but they're still difficult to absorb - especially the one who is worth more than $200 million! Would you have guessed that it's Mitt Romney?!
