The price of gold is at an all-time high right now, so that pushed up the cost of the golden statues since last year's Academy Awards. It's actually made from pewter plated in layers of copper, nickel, silver, and gold, but the cost of gold alone has significantly bumped up the expense in making the awards. A company where I was previously employed used to have an awards banquet for some of its staff in one department — imagine a kind of Oscars show (minus the glam) where the only awards were for actors in a leading role. The awards were based on success (measured in money), and all-around merit (kind of like a coach's award in high school sports).
I think recognizing employees in this way can be encouraging for some, but for others it could prove to be discouraging especially if there are office politics involved.

All of the women nominated for Best Performance by an Actress in a Leading Role at this year's Oscars are amazing in their own right. We've been reading about their unique career paths all week, and after learning about each of them I'm wondering whose résumé you'd want to flaunt most if you were an actress. Consider who you respect and find inspiring, ambitious, accomplished, and full of potential.

We love some of them for their sheer talent alone, some for their quirky or cute personalities, and others because they seem so normal.
