At this point, I think it's fair to say that UGGs will simply never go out of style. That may sound bold or even controversial, but you can't deny it: every year as temperatures start to drop, the familiar boots, slippers, and shoes begin to make their appearances — it's like clockwork.

Unfortunately for UGG owners, this means your shoes will probably get a lot of wear and tear. UGGs are known for being extremely warm and cozy, but they're not necessarily waterproof. (See here for our favorite waterproof alternatives.) From water stains to mud and dirt, it's easy to muck up your classic boots, making it essential to know how to clean UGGs at home.

Many UGG products are made with sheepskin, specifically twin-face sheepskin, meaning that both the fleece and the skin side have been treated, while the outside is soft suede. This combination largely defines the brand's comfort and quality, but also requires proper care. With some research, we've found that there are tons of easy ways to keep your UGG boots and slippers clean — from vinegar to suede cleaner, we've got you covered.

How to Clean UGGs at Home

For simple water stains, if you're able to tend to it fast enough, use a very damp cloth to lightly wet the rest of your shoes to even out the stain and prevent future discoloration and lines. Keep in mind that this is something you can do immediately after a water stain, but we don't recommend just blotting your shoes if the stain has already set.

If the stain has already set, you can use a damp sponge or cloth to dampen the entire shoe before taking suede shampoo or suede cleaner and rubbing it into the stain in a circular motion. Take the damp cloth you used earlier to wipe the shampoo off. Take another brush or cloth to apply suede conditioner over the spot you just wiped. Once you're finished, take some dry paper towels and stuff your boot with them so that your UGGs can maintain their shape and no excess water leaks through to the lining.

Never throw your UGGs in the washing machine. Let them air-dry instead and you should be good to wear your stain-free pair in 24 to 48 hours!

How to Clean UGGs With Vinegar

If you don't have any suede shampoo or suede conditioner, an easy and cost-effective alternative is distilled white vinegar. You'll want to follow the same steps outlined above, but just substitute with this at-home staple.

Additionally, if you're using your UGGs for snowier weather and you happen to get dried salt or salt stains on your boots, you can use a mixture of vinegar and water to dab at the smudges. Take a damp cloth and wipe away the vinegar, then blot the stain with a dry cloth. Let your shoes air-dry.

How to Clean Inside UGGs

While the outside of your UGGs may be more likely to get scuffed up, the inside of your UGGs can also get worn down. Sprinkle some baking soda inside your shoes and let it sit overnight. Shake out your boots or vacuum up the remaining baking soda, and your shoes should smell fresh and clean.

How to Use an UGG Cleaning Kit

Finally, one of the easiest ways to clean your UGGs is to use an UGG Care Kit ($35). The UGG Care Kit includes a protectant spray, which helps to prevent any future scuffs and stains before they happen; UGG Cleaner & Conditioner, which can help with tougher stains and gives your shoes a deeper cleanse; Shoe Renew, a freshening alternative to baking soda when the inside of your UGGs need a little deodorization; a bamboo brush; and a suede scuff eraser.
