i'm still wondering how the lady opened a box of crackers- put 10 grand in, FORGOT about it, and then decided to return an open box of crackers? o and whole foods restocked an open box of crackers?

but yes- of course i would have returned the money.

How did the money get into an unopened box of crackers? Seriously, this makes me question Whole Foods... the box HAD to be opened to put the $ inside! And they restocked that box! Gross! Someone could have put ANYTHING inside of there!

I really don't understand either. A lot of coincidences in this. I honestly don't think I'd return the money because I'm a horrible horrible person haha

I would be thinking about keeping it... except for my active imagination. I would totally think some bank robber or drug dealer saw me take it and would be out to get me. I *would* ask the police if I could keep it if nobody claimed it Laughing out loud

    1. what kind of loony seriously keeps her life savings in her a. her house and b. a box of crackers.

    2. and then why would she return said (probably open) box of crackers? i guess being a loony can explain that one well enough.

    3. i'd like to say i'd give it back, but i wouldn't. i could seriously use the money, and c'mon, if you keep your money in a cracker box... then return A BOX OF CRACKERS (WITH YOUR MONEY!!), you probably don't deserve to get your money back.

annie's bunnies are delicious, though. i used to buy them all the time. maybe i should start again Sticking out tongue

Everything about this story bothers me, except for the fact that in this economic climate, it is not used as an excuse to not do the right thing. Why are unsealed products being reshelved? I understand not having complete trust in banks (except for a little thing called FDIC) but what would possess you to put your money in a box of crackers rather than a safe? These things are a little hard to ignore.

LOL... @CoralAmber... I would think the same thing... or that maybe I was on some hidden camera show where they would give me a MILLION dollars if I did the right thing ..... lol....

i'm still a bit baffled on the thought that whole foods restocked an open box...that's an odd one for me - unless it means that the plastic bag inside wasn't open.

anyway, i would like to think that i would have done the same thing but given my finances right now - i don't know if i would be that good. it's hard to say - but it's really great that the family was honest enough to do that. i wonder if they got anything for being forthright with information

I'd have to think hard about it, but in the end, I'd probably return the money.

And I'm with everyone else... ew to the restocking of opened crackers.

I think the money in the box is so weird, who re-stocks an open box of crackers AND who buys an open box of crackers?!?

Hmm.. I would have LOVED to keep it, but I am a firm in believer in karma. I would have given it back too. But only out of sheer fear of what would have eventually happened to me in return if I had kept it. lol

This story is full of loopholes but, I'm impressed that such honest families still exist. Especially in this day and age. I hope karma is extra good to them!

I am shocked at the ridiculous amount of coincidence in this story but am glad to hear honesty still exists.

Still confused as to why the woman mistakenly returned a box of crackers of all things to return. Especially considering the fact that it had now become her safety deposit box. shrug

I can't say I would have called the cops when I found an envelope filled with 10k but hey I won't know for sure until I am in that predicament Eye-wink

I thought grocery stores had policies against restocking returned items. But seriously, how often do people actually return food? It's not like a shirt or something. Still, if I found that much money, I'd be freaked out and I would definitely bring it back. Like the cops thought, I would be afraid it was connected to a drug deal or something like that. Plus, it's just the right thing to do...you KNOW that much money that isn't yours belongs to someone who is pretty upset that it's gone.

I would have gotten home, seen that my crackers were already opened and upon investigating further, found that money was in it, I would have to pray and let it sit for a while.
I could return it to the store but what then? They could tell me anything like someone left their life savings in their crackers and could I please give it back. I think maybe I would have just kept it in the end unless it reached the news later on.

I'd like to say I would have returned it, but the little voice saying "but it's a tax on being stupid and putting all your money in a food item and THEN returning it to the store!" Little devil on the shoulder would be hard to ignore in this bizarre case...

I would've told the police if I found the moolah. I couldn't live with myself taking that much money. Karma's a beeyotch anyway.

As for the lady keeping her money in a cracker box, she needs to wake the eff up! Who does that? Banks are FDIC insured up to $100,000 and she only had 10 grand.

And a slap on the wrist to whole foods for reshelving an opened box! The gall!

I can't even concentrate on the ethical dilemma presented because I'm too confused by the facts. A box of crackers...returned...re-shelved...used crackers purchased. It's like the plot of a really bad Disney movie.

the whole re-shelving is kind of wtf and confusing, but tbh if i found that much money, in a cracker box for God's sake, i'd honestly keep it. easy cash and it could definitely help my family out. it's like finding money on the ground -- are you seriously going to ask around for the owner? if someone asked me if that twenty dollar bill was mine of course i'd say yes.

I read this story earlier this week on Perezhilton.com and I've been questioning since then, Why did HF's restock an open box or how did she get money into an unopened box?

and as for the crazy lady who put her life savings in a cracker box.. Banks are FDIC insured uptp $100,000.. aka more then her 10g, and how rude to not give a reward for the fmaily that was so honest in returning her money given peoples financial situation!
