Your Two Cents: Are Pantsuits Unfeminine?

Some anchors over at Fox News seem to think that a pantsuit makes a woman unfeminine. They dislike the outfit so much that anchor Brian Kilmeade says, "If I was to run for office, I'd run on the pro-skirt platform." So much jabber over a pair of pants. Watch:

Your Two Cents: Are Pantsuits Unfeminine?

Yes, they're unfeminine. I'd rather show a little leg!

Wow. Every single person on that clip came off as a total idiot. I can't believe one of them whistled, for chrissakes. They hearken back to the days of dirty male executives chasing their secretaries around their desks.

Pantsuits can definitely be feminine. Angelina Jolie, Charlize Theron, Nicole Kidman, and many other stars have worn pantsuits to events and have looked very feminine and lovely.

That being said, who CARES if they're not? Office attire is about being professional, not sexy. If I had to wear a suit to the office every day, you'd better believe I'd be living in pantsuits. Plus,if those men had to make sure their legs were perfectly smooth every day, had to stuff themselves into pantyhose, had to walk several blocks in winter weather, snow, or rain, they wouldn't be so adamant about skirts. What a bunch of asshats.

    Not only feminine, but sexy!

How sexist can they be? And for the love, why are these women there saying that pants aren't feminine? Have they ever heard of Katharine Hepburn?

That's so painfully sexist. It's so 1950s to expect a woman to dress feminine for the office. Hello, newscasters? Yeah, um, it's 2008.

So if pantsuits and skirtsuits are unfeminine, what are we supposed to wear to the office? Oh I know! We'll show up in little french maid outfits and serve all the big important men tea and cookies.

Give me a break! Yes, some pantsuits are really unflatteringly cut. But if you spend a little time and money, you can get some very nice looking pieces tailored to fit. A good pantsuit can make any woman look smart, sophisticated, and professional.

I think skirts look nicer. Then again, I abhor panty hose... so.... *shrug*

i think a woman should wear whatever makes her feel comfortable. when you are comfortable, your femine-ness comes across naturally.

I agree with the first comment... WHO CARES? Further, there is so much hypocrisy here. Men could start wearing skirts to the office, and NOBODY would question their masculinity. There is a double standard. Think of the Presidential election. I've seen neither Obama's nor McCain's wardrobes criticized even ONCE. Senator Clinton's is criticized ALL the time.

Why are they engaging in such a ridiculous conversation? (The nicest was I could put it!) Clearly, FOX must have ran out of stories for the day.

I am more comfortable in pants - and I have seen skirt suits that are much less feminine or flattering than some nice women's suits out there. I usually buy the jacket, pants and skirt for some variety, but I rely on pants in daily life.

This is just beyond a ridiculous conversation - but it highlights how some niche areas and professions are still wondering about this. I'm sure it is a huge decision for women anchors - skirts or pants on the air? If there is variety, does one dominate? It is ridiculous. There are still courts (like the Supreme Court, for example) that require women wear skirts as appropriate attire. I am not quite sure why something that is entirely appropriate and formal on the next guy wouldn't be for me, but there are still some archaic standards out there. (How is showing more skin more formal?)

Um, you're all making mountains out of mole hills. I'm *certain* it's not because this is about Fox News, right? Because *surely* you all aren't that biased and petty, right?
Seriously, you're all up in arms because they had a 30 second, playful conversation about pant suits vs skirts? I think you all need to reach inside your own pant suits and pull your panties out of the twist they're in. Word.

    @ foxie

"I'm *certain* it's not because this is about Fox News, right? Because *surely* you all aren't that biased and petty, right?"

It kind of is about Fox News. This kind of thing is just one indicator of how our televised news media SUCKS (not just Fox, though.) Is this clip really relevant in light of, oh, I don't know terrorism on the Afghanistan/Pakistan border, tragedy in Darfur, Russia becoming more totalitarian?

Who cares about pantsuits and non-pantsuits? I think this post is totally irrelevant to what SavvySugar purports to be about, which is "Bringing you everything from career advice to practical finance tips and guides, this is the place for all of your money and professional matters. "

I disagree with that kind of reasoning... reporting on less "important" matters or having a brief aside every once in a while doesn't invalidate other, more pertinent going-ons.
I'm also confused why it's on savvy, though. *?*

It's just sad that our hard news stations will report on Anna Nicole Smith or Britney Spears or have a "playful" 30 second conversation about what women should be wearing to the office to look feminine. That is what Extra, E! News, the Style Network, and those other celebrity-based, non-news shows are for.

Reporting on less important matter for a hard news show doesn't make other news less important it just takes away from the credibility of those news channels. I stopped watching all of those shows when they started putting BS or ANS, and crap like this on there.

And CNN, Fox and the like do consider themselved hard news shows.

And btw, how sexists and terrible is it for a man to make the accusation that pantsuits are unfeminine and that women should be wearing skirts or dresses to the office.

Thank you Brian Kilmeade for sending us back about 50 years.

personally i like pant suits...i think that sometimes the skirt suit is a bit dated...depending on what it looks like. it's the modern day when it's kind of cool to have a sexy pant suit - which still makes you look feminine and credible.

I can't BELIEVE we are having this discussion in this day and age! What business is it of theirs whether their coworkers wear pants or skirts. I wonder what these men's wives think of them. Ugh!

This is why I don't watch any of these news commentary shows.

There are some very nice and flattering pantsuits out there, but I tend to wear more skirts because they look better on me. To each her own.

I love Fox's "fair and balanced news". Gag me.

I tend to get a lot more attention from the boyfriend in my powersuit... I think it says more about the FOX news anchors' "mine are bigger than yours" complex than anything else.

    Veekore & foxie-

This is absolutely SavvySugar related — I'm sure we all think about how we present ourselves at the office and spend time choosing what we wear. You're focusing on the fact that it's Fox News, not the fact that it's just another workplace. Sexist conversations like this aren't confined to news sets.

I thought the pantsuit Katie Holmes wore on the cover of InStyle this year was incredibly feminine! I think if it's a slender cut with the right jewelry, it can be really cute.

Not everything is about Iran and New Orleans! I agree that some of the stories/commentary on these new stations is ridiculous, but don't forget, they are 24/7, so they are allowed to talk about something other than terrorism.

This is the most insulting, sexist drivel I have EVER heard. "At Fox we're all about being feminine!" Ahhh I just would like 5 minutes with that guy, that's all I need...

And thanks, Savvy, for posting this. I think it's part of your job to inform us on any issues pertaining to women in the workplace. This is even more than just about attire...it's how women are viewed professionally!

Savvy: "You're focusing on the fact that it's Fox News, not the fact that it's just another workplace."

Exactly. People love to gripe about Fox News. More to the point, this is the kind of story a lot of American news channels would run.

Can't listen to the clip right now, but I suspect the motivation is Hillary's wardrobe. A better issue might be that anything can look frumpy if it's boring, dull colors and/or ill-fitting.

I would love to unleash the "What Not to Wear" team on Greta van Susteren (sp?), BTW.

I think pantsuits can be very sexy. Skirts have their place too. I generally preferably skirts myself, but I like wearing pantsuits too because it's so unexpected and demands your attention. I think I do feel more confident and authoritative in a pantsuit.
