Career Tip: Start Doing the Work For the Job You Want

If there's a job that you think is your life calling, then it's time to start doing it.

If there's a job that you think is your life calling, then it's time to start doing it. Very often we start hoping and wishing for things but expect them to simply appear in our laps.

If you want a promotion at your job, then start performing the duties and responsibilities required at the next level, and work on doing different tasks. If you want to switch industries or roles, then start gaining the experience and knowledge needed for those brand-new positions. Take classes, freelance, or even offer your services for free just to gain the experience you need. For example, if you want to get into mobile development, then you should learn how to code using classes and online information and start attempting to make apps on your own.

Just remember: your track record speaks for itself!

Oprah's Career Advice For 20-Somethings

Although Oprah Winfrey is one of the world's most successful women, she didn't always have it easy.

Although Oprah Winfrey is one of the world's most successful women, she didn't always have it easy. In fact, to get to where she is today, she had to make a few sacrifices and work as a news anchor — a job she disliked — for a few years to pay the bills and gain experience and skills.

Winfrey told the audience at the O You! Conference in Los Angeles this past Sunday that young people often have the misconception that they have to give everything up to chase their passion. Winfrey advises to "do what you have to do until you can do what you want to do." You're not supposed to be able to get everything you want immediately, and when you're starting out, you should "keep a foot in the door" of your passion while doing what "you have to do to feed yourself."

Today, Reddit users had the opportunity to ask Larry King some burning questions on the site's Q&A subsection — IAmA. Since leaving CNN, the 78-year-old cofounded Ora TV, a production company, with billionaire Carlos Slim. Larry King Now, a new web series produced by his firm, recently debuted on Hulu.

Here are some of the more interesting quotes from King:

  • The best piece of advice given to him: "Again, always be yourself. Every famous person I met had this advice. Never be afraid to be yourself, and never be afraid to take risks. People who don't take risks never go anywhere."
  • The miles of suspenders he owns: "You'd have to calculate, but I do have 150 suspenders. I have a lot more ties than suspenders though."
  • A time when he was scared during an interview: "I was in prison on Rikers interviewing a mother and son convicted of killing someone. Sante Kimes and Kenny Kimes. The way the son looked at me, had I not been surrounded by guards, I think he would have [killed] me."
  • Going back to a time in his life: "It would be the day I started smoking, and I would have not started to smoke. I paid a heavy price for my tobacco enjoyment."
  • What it's like to interview Malcolm X: "I really found him fascinating, bright. He taught me a lot about myself. I was always very liberal in the civil rights area, yet he made me think even deeper. He said to me 'You wonder what it's like to be young and never see yourself on TV. You're not in commercials, there's no black Santa Clause on the street. You're invisible.' That really struck me."

In Her Shoes: April Beyer, Matchmaker and Relationship Coach

In the spirit of Valentine's Day, April Beyer, expert relationship coach and matchmaker, gives SavvySugar an insider's look into her unique career.

In the spirit of Valentine's Day, April Beyer, expert relationship coach and matchmaker, gives SavvySugar an insider's look into her unique career. Helping men and women find lasting relationships for almost 14 years, she is the founder and president of Beyer & Company, a matchmaking and relationship consulting firm. She's frequently interviewed and has been seen on Dr. Phil, 20/20, and Good Morning America. Beyond her weekly clients, April writes on her blog, conducts seminars, and is working on a book to help women prepare for love and romance. April tells us what it's like to assist other people on their journey to finding love and happiness.

SavvySugar: Can you tell me about your career path and how your business has grown throughout the years?

April Beyer: I started out in the high-end matchmaking industry nearly 14 years ago. I had worked with a matchmaking company and was there for about six or seven years. I was responsible for many marriages there. In 2003, I decided to venture out on my own and start a relationship coaching and consulting business. Now, I still have my matchmaking company. I work with a handful of highly successful marriage-minded men. I am also a coach and a writer.

Now my passion is to help women better understand themselves first so then they can naturally attract the man of their dreams. I am a little bit more of a holistic dating and relationship coach, but I think of myself more as is a communication and authenticity coach. For me, it's not about teaching people dating skills, it is teaching them relationship skills.
