Wedding registries are a sensible way for couples to get the things they need for their home, and they certainly make it easy on guests when figuring what to buy for newlyweds. But I know some wedding guests who complain that wedding registries make gift giving uncomfortable because the couple knows exactly how much was spent on the gift. There are no rules that say wedding registries are a must for the bride and groom or for the guests to use, but I also don't know any couples that have chosen to go without one.
I'm not going to mention any names, but someone who lives in my apartment that isn't me did something rather silly the other night. This person decided to make expensive plane reservations late at night when he was exhausted, and ended up with a big mess. Delta's system wasn't working properly and this person's frustration became more and more heightened, as the system wouldn't accept his credit card. Turns out that the system did accept his card and charged several thousand dollars worth of plane tickets. Of course it's an obvious mistake and he was able to have it handled in an hour, but late Monday night after a holiday weekend is the last time you want to go back and forth on the phone with an airline and a bank.
You're not only less likely to make this kind of irritating mistake when you're more awake, but choosing to make arrangements at a time when you're more focused will likely yield better decisions. With a keener eye, you're less likely to miss deals and you're in a better state to search various travel sites for the best prices. On a happy note, tickets were actually 30 percent less the next night when the tickets were actually booked. Maybe there is some truth to the theory that the best travel deals come along on Tuesdays!
Maybe it's the resurgence of Sex and the City that has prompted all of the profiles of New Yorkers getting by on their salaries in an inflated city, but they seem to be popping up all over The New York Times during the past couple months. The notion of what is fiction and what is reality is written between the lines, though the realities they picture really aren't much different from how 20-somethings around the country try to balance the cost-of-living with having a social life. The most recent piece published in the Times described the money tactics of various NYC newcomers, specifically "those who are neither investment bankers nor being floated by their parents." Discover some of the ways they sustain living in the most expensive city in the US when you read more
USA Today profiled the financial situation of Gen X (which they define as those born from 1965 through 1980) and found that most of them are surprised they're not as secure financially as their education levels and income would suggest. About 20 percent of adults in their 30s are still paying college loans, nine out of 10 consumers in their 30s are in credit card debt, and most are struggling to save for retirement while paying down their debt-loads. According to the Employee Benefit Research Institute, more than one in three workers ages 35 to 44 aren't setting aside any money for retirement, and among those ages 25 to 34, 45 percent aren't saving.
It seems as though some Americans put their rebate checks towards stimulating the Sex and the City economy. MainStreet visited the line that started forming yesterday at 6 a.m. for last night's NYC premiere, and asked some of those waiting how much they spent on tickets. It's quite the sliding scale!
TeamSugar member cherylrc is hoping to "make her résumé look more adult and less college student," and shared her résumé in my Résumé Remedy group to get some tips on how to make these improvements. She's tailoring her résumé for jobs in event planning and coordination, and she definitely isn't short of experience. From managing events at well-known restaurants to working as a self-employed wedding planner, cherylrc sure seems to know what she's doing!
Be less redundant: I think she could remove the last two positions currently listed. They don't tell me anything new and simply repeat responsibilities she's had in more current positions. Instead, expand on other positions that are lacking in detail and add information to make each experience stand out. The idea is to paint a picture of overall experience that shows some connectedness between positions, while making it clear that she's grown over the years and has made an impact in each job.
