Being a Mom Made Rihanna Feel Like "Nothing Is Impossible" — Even the Super Bowl

Knowing what we now know about Rihanna's Super Bowl halftime show — namely, that she was pregnant with her second child during the prep and the performance — it's pretty awe-inspiring that she said yes. After all, the lead-up to the show is notoriously grueling, and she's still juggling being a new mom to her first son in addition to all the other work on her plate. But in a new interview in the March 2023 issue of British Vogue, Rihanna said that motherhood actually inspired her to say yes.

"It's this knowing that you can do anything," she said, "even things that seem the craziest, like, 'I'm going to say yes to the Super Bowl in the middle of postpartum?'" She added: "What the heck am I thinking? But you're geeked on a challenge like that because you know what your body just did. You feel this sense of 'Nothing is impossible.'"

Rihanna delivered a similar sentiment at a Feb. 9 press conference to discuss the Super Bowl LVII halftime show. "When you become a mom there's something that just happens where you feel like you can take on anything and do anything. As scary as that was because I haven't been on stage in seven years, there's something exhilarating about the challenge of it all," Rihanna said.

"I feel like it was now or never, really," Rihanna said in a November 2022 interview with "Extra" when asked why she decided to say yes to the opportunity. The "Lift Me Up" singer added that motherhood seams to "unleash or unlock other parts of your superpower," but she also knew that the Super Bowl would push her.

"I wanted to take on the challenge and I wanted to do something that would force me to get back onstage," she said.

But just like any parent, Rihanna had to weigh the opportunity against what it would mean for her family. At the Feb. 9 press conference, the singer and businessperson acknowledged that after having her son in May 2022, she struggled to find a work-life balance.

"The balance is almost impossible because no matter how you look at it, work is always something that's going to rob you of time with your child," Rihanna said. "That's the currency now. The magnitude of how much it weighs when you make decisions on what you're going to say yes to, it has to be worth it."

Fortunately for all of us, the Fenty founder decided that the Super Bowl halftime show was worth it — and she delivered the performance of a lifetime.
