It's rare that you'll find pictures on the desks of employees here at Sugar HQ. Perhaps it's because we prefer to keep our pictures online, but nobody has really taken to nesting the place we spend hours and hours on end.
I always found it interesting that the men at the company I used to work were more prone to personalizing their desk space than the women. Most of their desks were adorned with framed photos of their families and some had cute notes from their kids on display.
Have you made your space more you by placing certain items on your desk?

Yeah I did it on my first day! LOL I brought pixs of my best friends/family and one of my boyfriend. They are all in frames on my desk and some on my wall. I like seeing their faces while I work and when I get stressed out I just think about them.
1I have a HUGE work space (sad that I'm leaving it soon) and I've personalized a bit of it. Mainly I brought in this cute little bulletin board that is hanging right next to my computer monitor. Some of the stuff on there are notes/numbers/reminders, but I also have a few pics hanging there too!
2Unless decorating means leaving sheets of paper strewn about, no, I haven't.
I work in a REALLY cool/creative environment, so I have a lot of coworker friends who have done some crazy stuff to their areas. Like when given directions to another guy's cube (he's on a floor I don't navigate much) he just said look for the large hanging Spongebob. Sure enough, he's under it. Oh, and Spongebob was wearing a toddler's diaper. When I asked why, he said it's so that if Spongebob has an accident, it won't get on his keyboard.
3Defi pics of friends and my fiance . . .also a friend got me this really funny/cut little Meerkat stuffed animal from a convention and I put that up in an interior window and it's so funny because sometimes when people walk by they jump because it looks sorta "real" or at least totally different that what other people decorate with hehe.
4When I started my first job I didn't even have a desk -- just a drawer to keep essentials in, and we sat at different workstations each night. So when I finally got a desk (and now I have a cube, even!) I just had to decorate it, so it felt like my own. Photos, a bulletin board covered in postcards, a framed print, fun magnets on my filing cabinet. I've been trying to cut back -- my minimalist colleagues probably think my space looks like a circus.
5i did it on my first day, too. i don't have any pics, but i do have little tchotchkes and all my design magazines so it makes things a little more inviting.
6I have a tiny cubicle and I have pictures up of my family all over it! I guess it distracts me from the drabness of having to be in the office, and reminds everyone who's crap is all over the desk haha.
7I have one framed picture of me and my husband, and a cat calendar. Everyone mocks me for the calendar
8I have three windows in my office and the window closest to my desk the sill has two pics of my son and other trinkets (wishbox, ceramic vase, candle, and bowl full of pebbles).
9my work space isnt small but its not exactly big either. I don't have anything personal at my desk except for a little candy dish filled with candy that I don't eat!
10I like to have a clear workspace so I don't buy stuff for my desk.
I have a small desk, but I have pictuers of my twins.
11My parents e-mailed me a picture of my cat with santa (it was for a humane society fundraiser) around xmas, so I printed it out and stuck it to my main binder. Other than that I've got nothing!
My Dad has tons of pics of the family up in his office, just like the post said! I do find it odd that men have more pics up than women. Thinking back to my old office it was the same case there.
12I personalized my desk. Pictures of Brette Favre (my crush and hero), pictures from the Navy and my half-marathon shadow box to motivate me to run after work.
13I didn't much when I had a cubicle, but now I have an office I put some things up: a ceramic spider figure from Targer during Halloween time and some candles, but that's about it. I was going to get an 'office plant,' but I'm too lazy.
14I have a few prints on the walls of my office and some photos up from my trips to Europe. I have a little snow globe someone in the office brought me and some vintage coasters a friend gave me. Most of it I have up because i have a very blank office with no windows.
15I have a picture of my rabbit, but that's about it. It's always good to look at cute, cuddly creatures when I'm feeling stressed.
16I HAVE A FEW PLANTS AROUND MY DESK AREA AND A PICTURE OF MY SON AND MY BOYFRIEND AND A CANDY JAR. HAHA.
17I telecommute 3 days out of the week, so decorating my cube at the office was my way of saying "Somebody works here! Don't store your crap here! Don't steal my chair!" It's mostly worked.
But recently I took home everything I would be upset if I lost, if I didn't go back into the office. I still have a bunch of silly print outs and magazine pages and odd little toys around my cube, but my really personal stuff is back at my desk at home. Job security FTL.
18I have been at my job for almost 4 years and only last year did I SLOWLY start adding a picture here or there. Now I have a total of 4 photos and 2 cartoon pictures. hahaha. And now I am leaving this job soon. I guess I am not a nester...and even at home I take awhile before my space looks lived in.
19I work from home, but it's still an office so I've made it my own. It's a little on the messy side, but I love to look up and see pics of my loved ones.
20I've only got a desk (open bull-pen like office), so I haven't really decorated it. I've accumulated some stuff, like Mardi gras beads from when a colleague got a King Cake at the office, but that's it.
And you're so right -- the guys near me all have family pics and memorabilia. I wonder if their wives are behind it.
21No, because I prefer a simpler, faster, easier exit strategy just in case
Also, work isnt personal for me so there is no need to bring my personal life into work for show and tell. Work is work, its not personal, its business.
Just not my style
22I didn't have a real desk for the first three months working here because they screwed up and didn't have a cubicle for me...ugh that was miserable. Now that I have a desk I keep hoping I will be getting out of here soon, and I like to keep my personal life seperate from work anyway. All my coworkers have tons of stuffed animals, pictures, cards, stickers, dirty mugs, etc and I think it looks really tacky.
23I never had anything personal at my desk. Im on a break but Im thinking that I may put up some pictures up.
24I don't work, but at my home computer desk, I have a little jewelry box filled with stampers and ink, cards, printer cartridges, pens, Sharpies of multiple colors, little dog stuffed toys, lotion, dog treats, contact book, calendar book (which ironically I don't use...) and of course, pictures of my pooch Zena. She may reside behind me on the couch, but when she's off sleeping somewhere else, the pictures remind me of what makes me happy especially on downer days. I have peppermint puffs at the moment too. My desk screams my name practically. XD
25Yup compared to my cowrokers I am the super nester. the way I see it is I spend my whole day here so I might as well make it mine.
26I am only here for the summer for the time being, so I don't feel the need. If this turns permanent in a year
, I will think about it.
27I've definitely personalized my desk... down to the cute post-it notes. I think my boss would prefer no one to personalize anything, but he likes everything to look the same on every desk.
On the male vs. female note, my dad definitely decorated more than my mom. My mom had a prettier office (paintings on the wall, etc), but my dad has tons of picture frames, etc. He loves to talk about us and now that he has grandkids, he has a grandkid wall. I think he just likes that all the people in his office will fawn over his grandkids if he has pictures up ; ) He would never get the frames himself though. He'll say things like, "If I had an Italy scrapbook, I could show everyone at work how much fun we had in Italy..." - he got the Italy scrapbook!
28Other - on my actual desk, I don't keep any personal, fun things. It's all business. However, my chalkboard is next to the desk and it happens to be magnetic. I use magnets to stick up a few notes and presents that students give me. I don't have any pictures up though.
29I've personalized my office, but not in the normal way. For one thing, most of what is in my office is stuff I would have anyway, and then I accumlate a ton of random props and costumes (and, at the moment, camp stuff), and if I like it, it stays in my office instead of getting put away.
30I have a few pictures, only one has myself and my two sisters in it, but we are only in the lower right part of the picture because we wanted to get the beautiful fountain and gardens in the shot when we were in the Tivoli Gardens in Italy. The other pictures I have are just shots that I took that I think are pretty... the Colosseum at night, the exit spiral 'staircase' at the Vatican museum, and a picture I took at night on a trip to NYC of a tree with pretty pink blossoms in front of some brownstones. They're held in place by some small, pretty, round magnets my mom bought me from etsy.
31Yes! It's the only way I stay sane in my drab office. I don't have a ton of stuff. Just a few photos, a couple plants, an air freshener, a radio and some organizer baskets.
32Thanks to the digital camera and lack of wanting to spend money on making prints of pictures, I don't have pictures of family and friends. I do have a lil bamboo plant (it's the only type of plant I can keep alive. lol), a couple of Snoopy toys, an Italy 365-days calendar, a couple of fans I bought from Japan annd a few pictures I bought off of deviantart.com. And of course, I have the usual desk organizer stuff...paper trays, pen/pencil holder, a mini whiteboard, etc.
33Oh yeah! I forgot to say that I HAVE to decorate my cube. It has high walls so I have no view. I hate staring at grey walls all day..it would drive me nuts. Plus, I find it hard to concentrate on work when I don't feel comfortable in my work environment.. Thank god for my Italy 365-days calendar!
I catch myself staring at it quite a few times during the day..
34i have two pictures in frames on my desk- one of me and my husband the day we got engaged and the other the day we got married. i have another picture on the wall of the two of us the day he was commissioned in the air force. i have a greek islands calendar hanging up and a tiny yankee candle that i like to smell when i get stressed out. other than that, all the crap on my desk is work related. :)i'm outta here in two weeks though, so i should probably start bringing some of this stuff home!
35I've definitely personalized my cube. I've got everything from a light tiara to a Winnie the Pooh mouse pad(kinda got a thing for him
). I figure that I spend more time here than at home so I should make it as much of it mine
as possible!
36I spend maybe two hours a week at my cubicle, so sadly, all I have there is a sweater.
37Even my boss can't resist showing off his robot toys.
