Only a handful of my friends actually use all of their vacation time, and I admire their ability to do so without feeling guilty. In a culture that promotes around-the-clock availability, it seems unusual that workers take all of the vacation time they've earned. Do you usually use all of the time off that you've accumulated or do you find it difficult to get away?

Firetrap
Ha! I would never not use my vacation time . . .I have precious few days and I intend to use every single last one for being as far away from my office as possible!
1My work caps our vacation time and I got to my max and they stopped accruing hours. Luckily my bosses are nice enough that they gave me a comp day and now make sure that I take enough time off (even if it's a day every other week) so that I don't lose vacation.
2I'm so completely unable to take days off. i'm the whacko that works with a 102 fever and junk like that. I always worry when I'm home that somebody is going to mess all my stuff up so I just work no matter what. I did take a week and half off after my wedding and that was fun but the whole time I was chekcing my e-mails from home to make sure they didn't pile up
3You bet I do! But I usually use them just to have an extra day or two to relax at home.
4I had a job where I had approximately 6 WEEKS of vacation to use (due to working weekends, holidays, being forced to work overtime, etc). I used them ALL. If you don't, you're a tool. Most countries get so much more vacation than we do. You're a fool not to use it. You can't regain your sanity otherwise.
5I don't get to use my vacation until I've worked here f/t for 6 months (though I've been here more than that because I was contract-to-hire). By the time that date rolls around, and because my last job didn't come with vacation time, I'll have gone more than two years without more than a three-day weekend. I can't wait!!
6Hell yes!
7I never do. At the end of each quarter I always get a reminder from payroll that I need to use them of lose them. I know get five bonus vacation days each year (earned after 5 years on the job) that I always use first before the regular earned vacations. I always like to keep enough time accrued in case of an emergency.
8*I now get
9I use up most of mine and save just a few days for just in case moments
10I've been saving it for a while and the month of Aug is going to RULE! 2 weeks full vacation (in hawaii) then 2 weeks of half days! Ohhh i love it
11At my last job, I carried over the maximum number of vacation days, and used up the rest. It worked out in my favor when I got laid off, and they paid me for my unused vacation days.
12I use my vacation days and random days but right now I am storing them all up so I can take almost 3 weeks off to go to Europe!!!! OMFG I cannot wait until then!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
13At my job, we get 4 hours of annual leave every pay period. So, I refuse to take a traditional vacation (1-2 weeks off) and instead just take random days off. I call them "mental health days." LOL
14we're forced to
15I save up my vacation time. I can't afford to go anywhere, and if I get let go later this year (it's a harsh economy) I'll get paid for that time.
16I definitely use up all my sick time, though.
yes, yes, yes! Bacation days are what keep me going, even those random one day-ers.
17Wow, I definitely need a vacation. Can't even manage to spell it correctly.
18Like graduatedsqueaks, I'm saving up my vacation days so that by the time my job ends, I will be paid for 10 unused vacation days.
19If I had vacation days I would totally use them, but part time workers don't get to enjoy that luxury!
20I use too many days here and there for stupid things, to add up to anything worthwhile. I have about 51 hours right now, which means 7 days. HMMM, I feel a 3 day vaca coming on:)
21Hell yes, I take them all and I don't even feel one teensy bit guilty. That's what they give them to us for.
22I've either always used them or got paid out for them when I left a job.
23I have a hard time taking off so I usually cash out. My bf forced me to take a week off by myself because things have been so crazy at work lately and it was the best thing Ive ever done for my sanity. It was so nice jus to be away for a minute! From now on I'll use my vacation days, theyre so worth it, and I earned 'em right?
24I always use all my vacation days. I have 4 weeks ... I take 2 during the summer, some days around Christmas and the remaining are taken randomly when I need it. At my job, we also have 10 days (think about it, that make 2 weeks ... I love that advantage) where we can call sick. I usually use them for medical appointments or just when I feel like I need to rest for a day.
25I deeply believe that no one is essential enough to be unable to take vacation.
Plus, I think I'm really more efficient if I take random days or half days (even if I'm on a rush) and come back in good shape instead of working until being exhausted.
hell yea! lol
26Hells yes I take my vacation! I'd go crazy without them!
27I currently get five weeks a year of vacation... And you bet I use every single one of those days.
Company policy is "use it or lose it." So I HAVE to take them all by December 31st.
28I only get 10 days off of sick and vacay days so I end up taking unpaid time off. My husband's family and mine live out of state, which leaves us without "real" vacations...
29I just started my job, so I don't really have any right now.
30no - and it really bugs me too. i used to never geta chance to use my days and i would lose them since i don't get them paid out. now i do my best to use them - but sometimes it's just hard. right now at my agency we get 3 weeks which is FANTASTIC - but i had roll over days from last year and now i'm still playing catch up .
31I do. I worked for a few years on contract and had no vacation. The environment was mentally and emotionally stressful, and it often led to me getting sick and being forced to take time off, unpaid.
Now that I am at a job with paid vacation time, I take it both when I want it, and when I need it.
Nothing beats waking up when your alarm SHOULD be going off, and being able to roll over and go back to sleep, jest because you can.
32I usually don't and what's worse is that we don't get paid out for them if we don't use them and they do not roll over.
33I definitely use most of them for long vacations (not necessarily to go away). I always leave a few days in the bank for those random days that I need a break.
34At my level (>5 years) I get 10 days vacation, 10 days sick time (doctor's appointments count as sick time, in hourly increments), and I think 40 hours of optional time. I can roll over half of my vacation days, but the optional time & sick days get lost if not used. I plan on using all my optional time, and at least 5 of my vacation time. I hope to roll over 5 of my days, so that next year I'll have 15 days & maybe take an overseas trip! There's also possibility I could be getting married next year (we've talked about it), so it would be nice to have extra time to take off.
Oh, and my job give you two days off if you get married & I think two days off if you move (but you only get the days one a year, you can't move like 3x a year & get two days each time).
We have a pretty good vacation policy!
