Your Two Cents: Do You Ever Say No at Work?

Whether it's fielding your boss's requests or responding to social invitations, feeling like you have to do it all can get in the way of achieving a work-life balance. Do you have trouble saying no?

I used to be terrible but last May my coworker left and hasn't been replaced which means I've been covering for her (no extra money or consideration, thank you). For the first six months I'd end up working extra and crying at my desk, now I'm getting more used to saying I won't do something. Well most of the time I still have to do it but at least people know I'm not happy about it! Actually Savvy, if you have any tips on how to say no please share! Wanting to do it is one thing, but I find it difficult to find the right way to phrase things without sounding rude.

I need to learn to say no more often. It's hard to say no to your bosses even when your swamped and you know their swamped and taking on more so you take on more as well; I do need to find more of a balance.

With my bosses, I try to keep my "no's" to an absolute minimum. However, I've found that there are plenty of people who will try to take advantage of you if you don't learn how to say "no" to them. I'm no pushover, so if your request is unreasonable, past deadline, or I'm truly swamped, I am not afraid to say no.

Ugh, I totally say "Yes" too often. Usually it's when my boss asks me to do things that no one else wants to do. I don't really mind doing stuff, but if anything ever crosses the line, I'll let people know.
