Your Two Cents: Would You Ever Go Back to an Old Employer?

Hopefully you haven't burned bridges with previous employers so that you can use them as references going forward. But would you ever consider crossing your in-tact bridges to return to a company where you used to be an employee?

Yeah, I would go back. It was a great place to work although some things frustrated me. I left for better opportunities but it hasn't worked out like I had hoped.

Its kind of an unwritten rule at my old company that you are more likely to be promoted if you left and came back. I want to get a job there again, I loved it, but they are on a hiring freeze for the time being. I will try back when spring rolls around.

I may be in a somewhat unique situation but I was laid off (not fired) in March, on unemployment for a few months, accepted another offer and then was given the opportunity to return to my old company a week later. The new offer would have been a big step backwards and the old company gave me a new position, a raise, and an office (plus they let me bring my dog to work). I'm very pleased with the decision, especially as I liked the people I worked with and their was no animosity about the layoff.

This would work better if there were a universal percentage of closing costs at the back so everyone got the same fee. I understand why rates are different but percentage of fees should be the same.

My old employer called me to ask me to come back and I did for a while seasonally.

It is really common in my industry for people to jump around. I went back to the first company I worked for out of college as a contractor and then got a much better job because of it. If you left on bad terms than don't go back but I do not think it is that big of deal.

I went back to an old employer for a part time and only lasted about another 6 months. It was the worst 6 months ever. But the extra money was nice.

i always try to do my best to leave on good terms and with all of my past jobs (with the exception of 1) i did do that - the one that i didn't well...my boss was an ass and i didn't give him the most notice that i was leaving. ( i called while he was flying and said i quit). in any event, the last job that i had - if they offered me enough $$ and the right title, then i would consider it...not right now, but maybe in the future. i work in an industry that you may end up back where you started - it's all just a matter of changing times.

Actually, I hope I get to go back to my old employer. There's not many opportunities in my field and they were the best paying. I left for traveling reasons.

Nope. The company I worked for before my current job was DREADFUL. And I'd return to the one before that only with a complete change in management. And they'd never take me back anyway, because I had some choice words to say about management in my exit interview. :rotfl:

It'd require a change in management and that will never happen as the managers are all part owners.

The job I have now is probably the only one I would never go back to, no matter what. It depends on why you leave... a lot of my jobs I had to leave because I was moving.

It depends on why you left! And also what kind of business it was...like the entertainment business, you shuffle yourself around between many employers and cities/states, so it's easy and likely that you'll return to an older one. It's seen as not only common, but if you're in the nightclub/entertainment industry and your old boss has you come back and picking up shifts, it says the best things about you! Funny how different it looks from this industry, whereas others see it as a low lol.

Don't go back, things do not change. Even if you like your old boss the company and it's issues will still be the same, or worse!

I'm work in the theatre world, which is very fluid so going from theatre to theatre and then back is pretty common-- of course, if it was a bad experience, thanks but not thanks!

We had a goodbye party last year for a great colleague, and kept joking it was the last one we'd throw since he'd left 3 times already! The legal field can be pretty fluid, people hop around, check out new things and try to keep ahead of the curve. I think it can be great to have that open door to go back to what you were doing at an old employer - esp if you jumped for financial or family needs and the timing now works and that door is still open.

today was my first day back at my old employer. i quit to go to school, but now that it's summer break, they're taking me on full time until august. what a coincidence that this post came up today.

Ooh, yay, I love "Samantha Who" and I'm pretty sure that picture is from that show. :) Anyways, I would be fine coming back to my workplace in the future. However, this is strictly on the basis that I would be coming back as an attorney and not someone doing the nitty-gritty tedious assistant work. I guess we'll see what happens in three years!
