Only a couple weeks have passed since swine flu was introduced to our common vocabulary, and a day doesn't go by without the term spoken in my presence. I'm sure you can relate. I was chatting with a friend about a dilemma she's facing because of the flu and am wondering how you would handle the tough position she's facing.
She's supposed to attend a destination wedding in Cancun this weekend and is going back and forth about filling her role as a guest. Her job is in the health and fitness field where she works hands on with dozens of clients each day, and she's concerned that if she contracted the illness she'd spread the flu to her clients.
She knows the possibility of coming down with the flu is slim, but she's wary about risking it. Her hesitation is heightened by the flu forcing the temporary closure of the resort where she was supposed to stay.
Would you still attend a destination wedding in Mexico right now?

i would still go i think. i think that you have to be careful but there are a lot of places in mexico that aren't being hit by the flu - so to not go and celebrate with the bride and groom out of fear isn't the best thing.
luckily my destination wedding last week wasn't in mexico - it was in the caribbean so my guests didn't get THAT scared.
1I'm torn on this, but I think I'd go in the long run. People (supposedly) only get married once after all and you should be there with them to enjoy their special day. I would suggest that she take it easy though when she gets back to the states and perhaps stay home from work one to three extra days to see if she develops any symptoms.

4My friend had a wedding for the weekend of the 15th at a resort at Playa de Carmen. I was still willing to go to the wedding. But she ended up cancelling the wedding after much debate with others - and now those who can go to the Bahamas are going there instead. She will now have a small wedding ceremony, but no reception. But I was willing to defer to whatever the bride wanted to do. And now I wish the wedding were still in Mexico because the panic is dying down - which is what I expected to happen!
5Check if there are even cases of the flu in the area where the wedding is. . it's tricky for her sort of morally because she works with people, but if there are no cases in that area she should defi go and just be diligent about hygiene while there. It's her friend's special day she should try to be there, I know at my wedding the presence of every single guest was so important to me. . .I say go.
6Are you kidding? Yes, go! Use the same precautions you would use at home.
I am going to Cabos next month...we have been watching for cases...I don't think there are even ANY cases in Cancun, she should be fine.

If I was in the wedding party, then I'd really have to think about it. I might still go, but take even more precautions. There's a couple of theories going around, namely that there's a few different strains of this swine flu - the weaker one actually was transported to the US, but the stronger one (ones?) stayed in Mexico, that's why so many people are sick and more healthy people have died from it. So I would be wary of going to Mexico, though I think the majority of deaths are in Mexico City - I'd definitely stay away from there if at all possible.
Especially since the resort that the person in the OP is supposed to be staying at closed for a bit because of it...just ask if they've sterilized everything, but she should be fine there if they're doing something about it.
8If I could afford to, I'd be there! I'm going to Phoenix for a wedding at the end of the month even though there are confirmed cases there! I don't think there are even cases in cancun. She's being ridiculous.

flu, I swear it's just something to distract us from the economy.
10So, I'd say, since there aren't even suspected cases, she's probably OK.
My cousin actually is having her destination wedding in Mexico. They've already put down the deposits for the wedding so I'm pretty sure that they're still going through it. Unfortunately, some of the guests have already planned not to go which is really too bad.
11Go. Her chances of getting the swine flu are not much greater in Cancun than if she stayed in the U.S., especially considering she works with people all the time.
